American Airlines to test iPad as a flight chart (Yahoo! News)

American Airlines will begin testing how well an iPad can function as a replacement for the various charts and tables that pilots must use during flights. In two flights between Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Shanghai, pilots will turn on their iPads and use them to plot and track the course of the plane as it flies, instead of using the tried and true method of paper charts.

Normally iPads and other electronic devices (including the?Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets that will be offered to some passengers by American)?must be stowed away during the take off and landing phase of a flight, thanks to a rule by the Federal Aviation Administration. This rule normally also applies to pilots; however, the FAA has made an exception in the case of iPads used to help a plane navigate.

According to American, if this transition to iPads is implemented fleet-wide, it could save up to $1.3 million a year in fuel costs. Countless tress would also be saved, as the move to electronic devices is very green and eco-friendly.
