Google Bait & Switch on Nexus 4 with USB OTG

Just about the only reason I bought this phone was because of an application that would allow me to upload my Garmin sports watch data using the USB port.? Plus, with no SD card the USB port would allow for additional storage.

?

Now we find that not only is USB OTG not available, but that it is never going to be avilable.?? Google has gone back and modified the manuals to reflect this.

?

Now that Google has pulled the bait and switch on us, is there any recourse?? I've had the phone about three weeks and just signed a new two year T-Mobile contract.

?

Are enough people affected to warrant a class action suit?

Obese, postmenopausal women are at greater risk for developing breast cancer and their cancers tend to be more aggressive than those in lean counterparts. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published in the December issue of the journal Cancer Research shows how this risk might be prevented.

"By using nutrient tracers for fat and sugar, we tracked where the body stored excess calories. In lean models, excess fat and glucose were taken up by the liver, mammary and skeletal tissues. In obese models, excess fat and glucose were taken up by tumors, fueling their growth," says Erin Giles, PhD, postdoctoral researcher at the CU Cancer Center and the paper's lead author.

In short, if you are lean, excess calories go to healthy tissue. If you are obese, excess calories feed the tumor.

"This implies that the menopausal window may be an opportunity for women to control their breast cancer risk through weight management," Giles says.

In this study, Giles worked with a team of scientists including postdoctoral fellows Elizabeth Wellberg and Sonali Jindal, as well as faculty members Steve Anderson, Pepper Schedin, Ann Thor and Paul Maclean. Their study also showed that tumors from obese animals had increased levels of the progesterone receptor, and this receptor appears to give tumors a metabolic advantage for growth. To extend their findings to humans, they recruited gene analysis experts David Astling and Aik-Choon Tan who analyzed 585 human breast cancers and found that human tumors expressing the progesterone receptor had the same metabolic advantage.

"Basically, we saw an abnormal metabolic response to fat and sugar in the obese that, in many ways, mirrors the response to fat and sugar in Type II diabetes," Giles says. Noticing this similarity, the group tested the use of the common Type II diabetes drug, Metformin, in their model of postmenopausal breast cancer.

"With treatment, tumor size was dramatically decreased in the obese, and tumors showed reduced expression of the progesterone receptor," Giles says.

Using a pre-clinical model, the investigators found that weight gain during menopause is particularly bad for those who are obese when entering menopause. Together, the results of this study suggest that the combination of obesity and weight gain during menopause can impact breast cancer in two ways. First, tumors that arise in obese women appear to have a metabolic advantage, and second, the inability to store excess calories in healthy tissues may further fuel tumor growth.

"While drugs may be useful in controlling breast cancer risk in obese, postmenopausal women, our results imply that a combination of diet and exercise may be equally if not more beneficial," Giles says.

The group's ongoing studies are testing whether interventions such as diet and exercise, during the period of menopausal weight gain, can improve tumor outcomes.

Police warnings about holiday celebrations raise questions about ...

Posted on: 11:30 pm, December 28, 2012, by Raymond Hawkes and Jon Burkett, updated on: 11:31pm, December 28, 2012

RICHMOND, Va (WTVR)- If you hold a house party and a friend comes over and leaves intoxicated, are you responsible for what happens to him after he leaves your house?

Legal experts say Virginia?s laws may seem surprising.

It?s the time of year where people like to party to ring in the New Year and perhaps toss back a drink or two with friends and family.

It?s also prime season for DUI checkpoints because accidents can tragically change a family?s life forever.? So police in Central Virginia are warning everyone out there that accountability starts at home.

?It?s a scare tactic,? said Donte Henderson of Chesterfield. ?They?re trying to get people to think about drinking and driving. It?s that season where some good folks are going to leave parties with the intent of just going home. But things will happen. I think police are taking the right steps.?

But if it?s your party, just how responsible are you for an intoxicated friend or family member?s actions?

??Dram shop? is a law that holds a person that sold someone alcohol liable in a bar or commercial setting,? says CBS-6 legal expert Todd Stone. ??A ?social host liability? is when you host a party and you?re serving someone alcohol. In Virginia, there isn?t a civil or criminal liability perspective unless it deals with alcohol consumption and a minor.?

?I feel if you don?t tell them then you are responsible, but if you say ?hey, don?t go and give me your keys,? and they insist on leaving then that?s their problem,? said Chris Anderson of Chesterfield.? ?You can only do but so much.?

Police say just play it safe by telling a family member or friend to stay at your place or call them a cab. ??While legal expert Stone says you may not be legally liable, remember, if something happens your conscience may get to you.

Windows 8 Desktop Editions Upgrade/Downgrade Tool

?

There are a few?scenarios that may require you to change from one Windows 8 desktop edition to another. The available Windows 8?desktop editions include?Core, Pro and Enterprise.?As long as you have a?valid license key that covers the edtion that you want to shift to, then this tool may help you out. It looks like I?ll be giving it a try once my new hardware arrives, since I still can?t seem to get access to the Windows 8 Pro source bits.

The arrival of my new Dell precision laptop, with?Windows 7 Pro installed,?has been delayed due to a backlog in customs. While I wait, I?ve been looking for my own workaround to the Windows 8 download issue that I posted the other day. I was able to locate?Windows 8 Enterprise source files, but I want to install it on my personal laptop. In order to make the install legitimate, I need to use?the Windows 8 Pro key that I?recently?purchased. It looks like this tool?called UpDown8?will allow me to achieve my goal. UpDown8?is supposed to perform?all of the required registry?changes and then you must rerun the Windows 8 installation setup. During the setup process a valid license key will be requested.

Warning: I highly recommend?trying this tool in the lab first. I?ve never tried UpDown8 before so I can?t speak for the results that may occur.

The Amazon Reviews For This Banana Slicer Are ... - Business Insider

Amazon sells a banana-shaped banana slicer called the?Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer.

For some reason that's better left undiscovered, the user-contributed reviews for the?Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer?on Amazon.com are wonderfully absurd.

You must read them now.

Here are the 5 "most helpful," as ranked by Amazon's algorithms.

No more winning for you, Mr. Banana!,?By?SW3K

For decades I have been trying to come up with an ideal way to slice a banana. "Use a knife!" they say. Well...my parole officer won't allow me to be around knives. "Shoot it with a gun!" Background check...HELLO! I had to resort to carefully attempt to slice those bananas with my bare hands. 99.9% of the time, I would get so frustrated that I just ended up squishing the fruit in my hands and throwing it against the wall in anger. Then, after a fit of banana-induced rage, my parole officer introduced me to this kitchen marvel and my life was changed. No longer consumed by seething anger and animosity towards thick-skinned yellow fruit, I was able to concentrate on my love of theatre and am writing a musical play about two lovers from rival gangs that just try to make it in the world. I think I'll call it South Side Story.

Banana slicer...thanks to you, I see greatness on the horizon.

Saved my marriage,?By?Mrs Toledo

What can I say about the 571B Banana Slicer that hasn't already been said about the wheel, penicillin, or the iPhone.... this is one of the greatest inventions of all time. My husband and I would argue constantly over who had to cut the day's banana slices. It's one of those chores NO ONE wants to do! You know, the old "I spent the entire day rearing OUR children, maybe YOU can pitch in a little and cut these bananas?" and of course, "You think I have the energy to slave over your damn bananas? I worked a 12 hour shift just to come home to THIS?!" These are the things that can destroy an entire relationship. It got to the point where our children could sense the tension. The minute I heard our 6-year-old girl in her bedroom, re-enacting our daily banana fight with her Barbie dolls, I knew we had to make a change. That's when I found the 571B Banana Slicer. Our marriage has never been healthier, AND we've even incorporated it into our lovemaking. THANKS 571B BANANA SLICER!

GREAT Gift,?By Uncle Pookie?

Once I figured out I had to peel the banana before using - it works much better.
Ordering one for my nephew who's in the air force in California. He's been using an old slinky to slice his banana's. He should really enjoy this product!

My 27 trained monkeys love this,?By?L. Blankenship "Lundy Love

As you may or may not know, I have 27 trained monkeys I use to do my evil bidding. Well, the younger monkeys teeth have not fully developed and so slicing a banana to feed them is a necessary chore. The adult monkeys used to have to chew up bananas and feed their young but not anymore with the Victorio Kitchen Products 571B Banana Slicer. The adults are going bananas over this time saving easy product. No longer so they have to taste and chew the deliciousness banana without eating it teasing them like a teenage prom date.

Now, they can eat and enjoy while i feed the young by slicing the bananas into small pieces that's easy for them to digest, This product is aces in my book and if you have 27 trained monkeys that will help you take over the land of OZ, i highly recommenced this product. This product is more useful than a barrel of monkeys

A military endorsement,?By?HappyHubby?

I have served in the US Army for over 12 years. I can say that there is technology being used by the military that is rarely seen in the civilian sector. Once in a while, however, an amazing product is released by the DoD for civilian use. The 571B is one of those products. Although once called the M571B Tactical Banana Slicer (TBS)V1, they have declassified it for public use. I am glad to see this product on the market today but I will warn you now, this is a CIVILIAN model and not designed for field use!

Don't stop reading now! You have 1,079 reviews like this to go! >>

Final goodbye: Roll call of some who died in 2012

Neil Armstrong would always be taking that first step onto the moon, and Dick Clark was forever "the world's oldest teenager." Some of the notables who died in 2012 created images in our minds that remained unchanged over decades.

Sadly, for others an established image was shattered by a fall from grace. Whitney Houston ruled as a queen of pop music, but years of hard living harmed her voice while erratic behavior and a troubled marriage took a toll on her image. And Joe Paterno, Penn State's longtime coach, won more games than anyone in major college football, but was ultimately fired amid a molestation scandal involving an assistant coach that scarred his reputation.

Some whose deaths we noted weren't known by image or even name but by contributions that changed our lives ? like Eugene Polley, inventor of the first wireless TV remote control, and Norman Joseph Woodland, co-inventor of the bar code that labels nearly every product in stores. Other scientists who died in 2012 included Lowell Randall, Martin Fleischmann, F. Sherwood Rowland, George Cowan and Bernard Lovell.

Among the political figures who died were George McGovern, Democrat presidential nominee who lost to Richard Nixon in a historic landslide, and ex-Sen. Arlen Specter, the outspoken Pennsylvania centrist. Others from the world of politics: Bill Janklow, Norodom Sihanouk, Charles "Chuck" Colson, Warren B. Rudman, Andrew Breitbart and Miguel de la Madrid.

The year saw the deaths of a number of TV stars including Larry Hagman, who played oil baron J.R. Ewing on "Dallas," and Jack Klugman, often remembered as the messy one of the 1970s roommates in "The Odd Couple"

Others in entertainment and the arts who died included: Etta James, Andy Griffith, Ernest Borgnine, Sherman Hemsley, Maurice Sendak, Donna Summer, Robin Gibb, Doc Watson, Richard Dawson, Nora Ephron, Phyllis Diller, Michael Clarke Duncan, Don Cornelius, Jan Berenstain, Ravi Shankar and Dave Brubeck.

Here is a roll call of some of the people who died in 2012. (Cause of death cited for younger people if available.)

Aero Rebel to continue good run in Dine In Style At The Pavilion Marathon at Romford

Aero Rebel is making up into a formidable marathon performer. After registering a couple of great long-distance wins, the black bitch is all set to strike in Dine In Style At The Pavilion Marathon, 750 metres open race, scheduled to be held at Romford on Friday, December 28th.

Aero Rebel reached here after enjoying mixed fortune at Monmore. She performed magnificently to win a similar event on December 12th. After leaving the fifth box, she maintained the highest standards of speed and stamina. The dashing bitch always led the proceedings, taking the top prize by four and a half lengths.

P. Young?s charge was quite impressive at Wimbledon last time. The daughter of Droopys Maldini, out of Final Rose, took the honours by two and a half lengths. She established her supremacy at the sixth bend, and stayed ahead afterwards. Consequently, she captured the first rank with ease.

Among her opponents are: Avit On Bertha, Head Iton Tom, Baliff Bob, Bridge Diva, and Confey Lemon. The 750 metres race is full of big names, thus an exciting battle is on the cards. The ultimate champion will get a handsome prize of 200 pounds. The officials are due to kick off the affair at 22:40 GMT.

Back in the groove, Head Iton Tom is expected to be prominent early on. The white and fawn dog is enjoying a favourable draw. After clinching a couple of terrific wins over 575 metres, E. Gaskin?s trainee is fully pumped.

Baliff Bob lacks a look round, and this is a big concern. The brindle dog ran well in the trials at Belle Vue last week, but being equally good against this opposition is impossible.

Avit On Bertha set a new track record, when beating a star-studded line-up on December 12th. After taking a fascinating triumph, the white and black bitch lost her rhythm, and faced a shameful loss at Hove last week.

Bridge Diva is likely to be taken off her feet in the early stages. Confey Lemon appears to be punching above her weight. We wish the best of luck to all the contestants.

China seizes TVs, satellite equipment in Tibetan area

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese authorities have confiscated televisions from 300 monasteries in a heavily Tibetan part of the west of the country and dismantled satellite equipment that broadcast "anti-China" programs, prompted by Tibetan self-immolations in the region.

Some 94 Tibetans, including 81 this year, have set themselves on fire in protest against Chinese rule. Five self-immolations occurred in Tibetan-dominated Huangnan prefecture in Qinghai province, the state-run Qinghai news agency said on Thursday.

The government in Huangnan said its approach in tackling self-immolations comprised of "guiding public opinion on the Dalai issue", increasing patrols and "blocking outside harmful information", according to the news agency, which is managed by the Qinghai government.

"At this critical moment for maintaining social stability in Huangnan prefecture ... (we must) strengthen measures and fully fight the special battle against self-immolations," the article said.

"We do not know anything about it," an official from the Huangnan prefecture government told Reuters by telephone, when asked to confirm the report, before hanging up.

Beijing considers Nobel peace laureate the Dalai Lama, who fled China in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule, a separatist. The Dalai Lama says he is merely seeking greater autonomy for his Himalayan homeland.

The article said the prefecture's agricultural and pastoral areas had relied on certain satellite equipment "to watch and listen to overseas, anti-China programs".

The local government would invest 8.64 million yuan ($1.39 million) to install 50 transmitters that would broadcast 70 percent of the prefecture's television channels, the report said.

China has repeatedly denounced the Dalai Lama and exiled Tibetan groups for fomenting the self-immolations.

The United States and several other countries have called on China to end repressive policies and to negotiate with the Dalai Lama.

Beijing has defended its iron-fisted rule in Tibet, saying the remote region suffered from dire poverty, brutal exploitation of serfs and economic stagnation until 1950 when Communist troops "peacefully liberated" it.

Porsche faces more VW lawsuits after court win

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Porsche SE shares surged on Friday after it won a dismissal of a U.S. lawsuit by 26 hedge funds, one of several legal actions over its purchase of shares in Volkswagen , Europe's largest carmaker.

Posche shares were trading 6.3 percent higher at 1009 GMT, but analysts warned the German company's triumph in court hinged on a legal formality rather than the substance of the case.

On Thursday, a five-justice panel of the New York State appeals court in Manhattan found Porsche had established that the state was the wrong place in which to bring the lawsuit.

The hedge funds now have 30 days to decide whether to pursue the case in the Court of Appeals, New York's highest state court.

"The decision is made with regard to the jurisdiction and not on a claim itself," DZ Bank analyst Michael Punzet said, adding other lawsuits seeking damages were ongoing.

A $2 billion lawsuit brought by other hedge funds in a U.S. federal court is pending.

Porsche was not immediately available for comment on Friday. The company has previously said the hedge funds' lawsuits are without factual and legal merit.

Last week, prosecutors in Porsche's hometown of Stuttgart announced market manipulation charges against former Chief Executive Wendelin Wiedeking and former Chief Financial Officer Holger Haerter tied to VW share purchases. The defendants' lawyers denied wrongdoing by their clients.

In the case dismissed by the New York State appeals court, hedge funds including Glenhill Capital LP, David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital LP and Chase Coleman's Tiger Global LP had accused Porsche of causing more than $1 billion of losses by cornering the market in VW shares.

The funds accused Porsche of engineering a "massive short squeeze" in October 2008 by quietly buying nearly all freely traded ordinary VW shares in a bid to take over the company, despite publicly stating it had no plans to take a 75 percent stake.

When Porsche revealed it had amassed control of roughly three-quarters of VW, shares of VW soared, briefly making the Wolfsburg-based carmaker the world's biggest company by market value. The surge caused losses for hedge funds that had bet on a decline in the stock price.

Former CEO Wiedeking's attempts to take over VW overwhelmed Porsche's finances, forcing it to sell its sportscar business Porsche AG to VW instead.

23 Dec

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

  • One kind exists mostly from showing a text word by word in the middle of the screen. Showing each word a very short time and so you can read at a high wpm because you never need to move your eyes.
  • Another kind is merely a speed reading article disguised as app.
  • Another kind is no speed reading app but just a reading app with a fancy name.
  • Yet another kind is training in the form of news/actually.
  • And the last kind is a training app, not for your own stuff but purely for training.

I only tested them quickly and unions talked the non-interesting. But they aren?t quite what I?m looking for. Maybe I should write one myself for training and guided reading.

For a moment there, we almost believed it: Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz's radical solution for the ongoing fiscal cliff nightmare, and maybe politics entirely, was going to work. Nine Practical Pointers for Effective Estate Planning - Washington ...

Estate planning can be intimidating if you don?t have enough
information at hand to make crucial decisions about your future and the future
of your loved ones. Consider these nine practical tips for successful estate
planning:

?

  1. Keep your important documents like your will or
trust up-to-date. Keep your legal residence address, marriage status, children,
    guardian list, etc. updated.

  2. Keep track of beneficiaries for all of your
IRAs, qualified plans and insurance policies. If you don't, they may be going
to someone you no longer wish to receive them.

  3. Maximize the liquidity of your estate. Liquidity
is defined as the ability to quickly turn assets into cash. Without sufficient
cash to pay taxes, funeral, and other expenses, your family may have to sell
illiquid assets - such as a family business or other property - at an
    inopportune time.

  4. Maintain an appropriate mix of investment risk.
Over time, more risky investments like stocks and mutual funds should be moved
into safe and stable investments such as annuities.

  5. Name a dependable executor and/or trustee.
Executors are called upon to collect assets, pay obligations, and distribute
your assets. Your trustee must enforce all the provisions of any trusts you
created. Choose people who have the knowledge, integrity and stamina in the
face of pressure from family members to fulfill these obligations.

  6. If you have minor children, consider naming one
guardian for your minor children and a separate guardian for the property
you've left to support them. The best guardian for your children may not be the
most effective money manager you know.

  7. Estate planning for your spouse. If your net
worth is high enough, your estate may be subject to taxes. A simple estate plan
can potentially save your loved ones hundreds of thousands of dollars in estate
    taxes.

  8. Leaving the right assets to the right people.
Make sure proper financial management systems are in place for people such as special
needs children, teenagers, or other dependents.

  9. Plan, plan, plan. While estate planning is
important for everyone, it is most important for business owners, who must plan
for the succession and/or buyout of their business.

This is just
an overview of estate planning issues that should be addressed by you and your
attorney. Remember, every situation is different and your estate plan is not
going to look exactly like your neighbor?s estate plan. It is best to contact a
knowledgeable estate planning attorney to assist you in protecting everyone you
love and everything you have.

Best of Whistler 2012: Sports & Recreation - Pique Newsmagazine

Favourite Whistler Athlete (Overall)

?Ashleigh McIvor? has won everything there is to win in the sport of ski cross ? World Cups, pro events, the world championships and, with Canada cheering her on, the debut of her sport at the 2010 Olympics. She announced her retirement from racing back in November to focus on other opportunities in skiing ? and to preserve her left knee after undergoing a third major surgery in Jan. 2011 after landing flat during training at X Games.

While we'll miss all the hardware she brought home as a professional racer, McIvor is not really going anywhere. She's only 29 years old after all, and she's still an avid skier, mountain biker, surfer, etc. who will be awesome at all those things for years to come.

"I was so excited," she said of hearing that she had won this Best of Whistler category once again. "(Fiance) Jay (DeMerit) was making fun of me for how excited I was... Obviously Whistler is the one place in the world that is most important to me, and to know I have the respect of other members of the community is just amazing. Almost more amazing than any medal I've received."

McIvor's post-racer career is going strong. She worked with CBC to broadcast the ski cross World Cup, and could be in front of the camera at other events leading up to the 2014 Olympics as well. She's also getting lots of work filming, and has been approached to be in a big-mountain feature film as well ? something she always wanted to do. "Honestly, that's a big part of why I got into ski cross in the first place, to make a name for myself so I could do that sort of thing," she said.

"It's really nice to be at home skiing powder with my friends."

Second on the list for Favourite Whistler Athlete was none other than Sarah Burke, who was tragically lost to us after a halfpipe crash in Utah last January.

Burke was a true trailblazer in skiing and in women's sports.

She pushed for the inclusion of women in freeski events and competed against men when she had to ??which was often during her early years. As a competitor, she pushed her sport further and faster than anyone expected, driving the progression while maintaining her status as the athlete to beat in every event. She also happily created her own competition, coaching at Momentum ski camps in Whistler ? which she first attended as a camper at age 14 ? and inspiring other girls to get involved. When the sport of ski halfpipe was added to the Olympic Games, she was given a lot of the credit, both for the way she represented the sport and for the way she increased women's participation enough to make it an easy decision for Olympic organizers.

Rules for Outsourcing Branded Content

On June 29, 2012, WBEZ?s This American Life sparked a debate with no foreseen expiration date.

NewspapersProducer Sarah Keonig of WBEZ examined the relationship between the Chicago Tribune and its new content partner, Journatic.

An update from This American Life defined Journatic under the following terms:

?Journatic is a company that outsources labor to generate 'hyperlocal' news content for newspapers all over the country. To create this content cheaply, it uses offshore researchers and writers, especially from the Philippines.??

The episode states that Chicago Tribune writers were cast aside to allow for more (outsourced) content from Journatic. Not only did this ignite anger, but Koenig also revealed that Journatic writers were using fake bylines to sound more American. The reaction to the story was not a positive one.

On July 13, the Chicago Tribune announced the suspension of Journatic services after uncovering plagiarism in a story. ?And on July 14, the head of editorial at Journatic resigned.

As a result, other news organizations also decided to leave Journatic.

But, the story doesn?t end there!

On July 22, the Chicago Tribune published an article that discusses the ongoing struggle between large news organizations and quality?hyper-local journalism. After five months of investigation into Journatic article quality, and debate both within the Tribune and media community at large, the Tribune recently announced its decision to resume working with Journatic. However,?the Tribune will continue the partnership with renewed limitations, only using Journatic for informational pieces like listings.?

So the question remains ? What are the universal standards for outsourcing content?

The answer is simple. And complex. There aren?t any.??

In the spirit of traditional journalism, local news might not be the best place to outsource content. For many, local news is personal and emotionally meaningful.?

But what about business output? Following the above controversy, I decided to examine the nature of outsourcing in terms of business content.

When Should Your Brand Outsource Content?

?Content is king? has become something of a marketing mantra over the past few years. So, naturally, agencies and marketers alike are trying to find new ways to produce more content.

Between Google algorithm updates and perceptions in the marketplace (such as seen in the Journatic controversy) some might be apprehensive to try outsourcing at all. But, if done right, outsourcing can be beneficial for your business in the long run.

Before you outsource, define the ethical standards and business goals that are specific to your organization. In order to make a justified business decision, make two lists. The first will consist of content traits that you feel are prime for an outsourced team or writer. The other will list characteristics of content that must be written by in-house writers. Share these lists with all employees to stick to a uniform set of principles. When it comes to content, similar to the approach the Tribune took when it chose to re-engage with Journatic, it is key to analyze the purpose and nature of each piece before delegating items.?

Branded Content Outsourcing "Rules"

Outsourcing Rules

There are times when it?s unnecessary (and maybe even risky) to outsource content. Define these lines for your business and maintain that standard as you experiment with outsourcing.

If there is an intimate element to a topic, then it?s smart to give the content your own personal touch. But, if you must turn to outsourcing for business support?for example, if you don?t have the capabilities or resources in-house?you can outsource even intimate content, if you choose the right partner.

If you are under-staffed or searching for writing talent, don?t settle quickly. The right agency or organization can partner with your business and, over time, become an extension of your team. A trusted partner spends time getting to know your business and your industry in order to write efficiently and ethically. During the discovery process, be transparent, share industry resources and make time for interviews. It?s key to know that your writers not only know your industry, but also identify with your brand.

If you are able to find the right match, then outsourcing might look like a lot like insourcing.

In any case of outsourcing, you still need to serve in an editor role to make sure the content meets your standards, conveys the right feelings/messages and also is technically sound. If you choose to outsource all company content, be sure that someone is acting as editorial head in order to review (and make personal additions to) all content.

The Decision Behind the Dollar Sign

There?s no escaping the budget factors of outsourcing your content. If you decide to outsource, it?s important to analyze the relationship between price and quality. Generic writing from a stable of content farm freelancers might be cheaper, but is it really better? ?

Productivity and quality are key. High quality articles will make a stronger impact on prospective and existing customers, giving them a reason to come back. Plus, readers often share great articles they love with followers on social media, resulting in an added SEO boost. However, if content quality is low or obviously rushed, Google may purposefully penalize your site. Analyze the balance between content quality and quantity before allocating resources to an outsourced writer.

A well-populated, resourceful website is great; one that brings value with each article and asset is better. Strive to do both?with or without outsourcing.

How do you tackle content creation for your organization? Have you ever been burned by outsourcing? We?d love to hear the community?s thoughts on this important topic.

Putin says he will sign anti-US adoptions bill

(AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he will sign a controversial bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children, a defiant move against the U.S. that has angered some Russians who argue it victimizes children to make a political point.

The law would block dozens of Russian children expected to be adopted by American families from leaving the country and cut off one of the main international routes for Russian children to leave often dismal orphanages. Russia is the single biggest source of adopted children in the U.S., with more than 60,000 Russian children being taken in by Americans over the past two decades.

The bill is retaliation for an American law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators and part of an increasingly confrontational stance by the Kremlin against the West.

Putin said U.S. authorities routinely let Americans suspected of violence toward Russian adoptees go unpunished ? a clear reference to Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler for whom the bill is named. The child was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Putin indicated that he would endorse the measure.

"I still don't see any reasons why I should not sign it," he told a televised meeting. He went on to say that he "intends" to sign it.

UNICEF estimates that there are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, while only 18,000 Russians are now waiting to adopt a child.

The U.S. State Department says it regrets the Russian Parliament's decision to pass the bill, saying it would prevent many children from growing up in families

Critics of the bill have left dozens of stuffed toys and candles outside the parliament's lower and upper houses to express solidarity with Russian orphans.

Children rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov on Wednesday said that 46 children who were about to be adopted in the United States would remain in Russia in case the bill comes into effect. On Thursday, he petitioned the president to extend the ban to other countries.

"There is huge money and questionable people involved in the semi-legal schemes of exporting children," he tweeted.

kathrn-mockler-onion-man-saddest-place-on-earth-writer-writing-canada-toronto-uwo-western-university-filmmaker-screenwriterYou?re a woman of many talents: not only a writer but also a filmmaker, screenwriter, editor and teacher. How to you balance such a multiplicity of interests and activities?

I have a short attention span, so I like to work on many projects at once. Teaching and editing are a nice compliment to writing because for me they require a different energy than creative writing. Writing in diverse genres keeps things fresh, and collaborating with artists and filmmakers allows me to work on many projects at once. Often I adapt my work from a poem or story to screenplay or video art. My short film?Skinheads(2006, directed by Michael Vass) and my video project? The Reluctant Narrator?(2007, co-created with my husband?David Poolman) were both adaptations of poems from? The Saddest Place on Earth.

?

?

..

You?ve published two books so far,?Onion Man?(Tightrope Books, 2011) and, most recently,?The Saddest Place on Earth?(DC Books, 2012).?Onion Man?is a series of linked poems exploring coming-of-age, drug use, drinking, sex, family dynamics, Alzheimer?s and disease.?The Saddest Place on Earth?is another collection of poems, this time satirizing contemporary politics. These collections at first glance seem to explore fairly different territory, but coming from the same writer in quick succession one would be inclined to believe that they deal with some of the same themes. Fill us in.?

.

Although the books were published in quick succession, they weren?t written that way.?Onion Man?was a project I started over fifteen years ago when I was completing my MFA in Creative Writing at UBC. Over the years, I picked away at the poems, but I always seemed to struggle with the narrative. In retrospect, I don?t think I knew what the poems were trying to say until I went back to them much later. As I prepared the manuscript for Tightrope Books, I tried to bring out some of the gender and class issues in a more significant way. For example, I realized that the narrator had class biases of her own?even though she?s critiquing the world around her. I don?t think this is something I would have recognized as a younger writer because I was too caught up in identifying with the narrator and tapping into my own experiences to be able to critique her.

?.

.

.

I started writing the poems in?The Saddest Place on Earth?in 2004. These poems were a response to a few things that were going on in my life at the time. I was reeling from all of the post 9/11 media absurdity, and I was teaching composition at a community college and felt like a cog in a system that seemed to function more like a corporation than an educational institution. At the same time, my husband was working on a series of paintings and digital drawings called?Start as You Will Go On. As I continued to work on the poems over the years, I?m sad to say that what started out as a critique of American politics and media now extends to the Canadian government?s disregard for democracy and its assault on the environment?essentially this country has become a disgrace. Some of the poems that I wrote more recently such as ?The Government? and ?Environmentalism? speak to that.

While these two collections appear different in style, tone, and subject matter, at the heart of each collection is a critique. I also hope readers enjoy the humour that I?ve tried to incorporate in both books.

Onion Man?s use of a linked, overarching narrative that tells a story over multiple poems is somewhat unusual for the genre of poetry. What compelled you to tell this story through poems instead of taking the more conventional route of short stories or a novella??

?

It had been suggested to me to turn?Onion Man?into a novel, but I always saw it a series of poems. When I decide on genre, I tend to let instinct guide me. I was also influenced by a series of Canadian poets who were writing narrative novel-like poetry series such as?Douglas Burnet Smith (The Knife Thrower?s Partner), Michael Ondaajte (Collected Works of Billy The Kid), and Michael Turner (Company Town?and?Hard Core Logo).

What is?The Rusty Toque?

The Rusty Toque?an online literary and arts journal that I co-founded with my colleague at Western University, Aaron Schneider. David Poolman joined us as art editor this year and is bringing in some exciting artists for our next issue.

Our mission is to publish diverse, innovative literary writing and visual art and to publish reviews of Canadian and international fiction and poetry.

The journal is published twice a year, and we run an ongoing interview series called?Rusty Talk?in which we interview writers on the writing process. To date, we interviewed Sheila Heti, Lynne Tillman, Rick Moody, Christian B?k, and many more.

.

.

We?d love to hear more about your films and what relationship they have to your writing.

Since I completed my MFA, I predominately identified as a screenwriter. My thesis was a feature screenplay called?Piss Tank?that was optioned for several years but didn?t end up getting made. In 2005, I went to the Canadian Film Centre and had the good fortune to have two short films produced (Skinheads?and?Spoonfed)?through the NBC/Universal Short Film Program. I continued to work with Michael Vass, who directedSkinheads,?and we made two more short films?Umbrella?and? The Old Ways. During that period, I also collaborated with my husband on three video series:?The Reluctant Narrator, Reindeer in the Mountains,?and?Three Vignettes.?Over the past two years, I?ve focused a little more on poetry, but I?m still at work on a feature script called?Weak People Are Fun to Torment.?Many of my poems and short stories are visual and dialogue-driven. I don?t doubt that years of writing screenplays influenced this.

kathrn-mockler-onion-man-saddest-place-on-earth-writer-writing-canada-toronto-uwo-western-university-filmmaker-screenwriter.

Your contribution to Papirmasse is?White Snake, a darkly funny story in which the narrator attends a party at the home of a woman with no arms who is married to a snake who works with at-risk youth. The story touches on social anxiety, trust and belonging. What inspired it?.

This poem was a dream that I recounted to my sister, Susan Mockler, who is a psychologist and fiction writer. She started analyzing it, and I thought?oh, I better write this one up. I?m sure it?s related to my constant state of anxiety about the affairs of the world, but essentially it was dream that I transcribed.

The problem and the blessing with this series is that they come to me pretty much intact. I can?t force them or think too hard about them while I?m constructing them. To be honest, it feels more like fishing than writing. My other writing involves a lot more planning and revision than this series does.

?

What?s on your plate for next year?

I?m working on another poetry manuscript similar in tone to?The Saddest Place on Earth, and I?m starting a novel.
