Tahoe Quarterly 9th Annual Mountain Home Awards

PERFECT BLEND

This Martis Camp home has space for everyone.

?

Walk through the front door of this Martis Camp home and ?Hirshy? will catch your eye.? With tongue-in-cheek mountain humor, Doug and Chona Hirsch ? whose last name means ?stag? ? mounted this acrylic deer head on the fireplace at their great room?s far end.? There the deer sits in the light from a wall of south-facing windows and epitomizes what this Tahoe home is all about: a light-hearted, family-friendly environment showcasing a contemporary mountain style.

?We really wanted something both rustic and modern.? We?ve rented a lot of places in Tahoe over the years, and I felt like I had stockpiled all these ideas for when we were ultimately able to fulfill our dreams,? Chona says.

The Los Angeles-based family?s home was completed in 2010 after a fun collaboration between the Hirsches, Truckee architect Jason Wooley and Truckee builder Mark Tanner.? While the goal was to blend a family-friendly home with one ideal for entertaining, equally important to the team was to create exciting blends of styles and materials.

?This whole project inside and out is about blending a contemporary architectural aesthetic with a more mountain architectural aesthetic,? Wooley says.

The home often contrasts rustic reclaimed wood with contemporary elements such as steel detailing.? Heavy granite, indigenous to Sierraville, surrounds the black metal garage doors.? Mountain materials such as reclaimed picklewood, barnwood and ghostwood from a Montana reservation are mixed with pre-rusted corrugated corrugated Corten outside and exposed steel beams inside.? A tin corrugated ceiling in the kitchen contrasts with modern stainless steel appliances.

?They really like a contemporary look, but they felt it wasn?t entirely appropriate for this environment,? Wooley explains.?? Traditional gables face the street, but in back, a modern roof covers the large great room to open up the scenic view.

The project began with Wooley suggesting Martis Camp, the 2,177-acre private community in Martis Valley, as a site for the Hirsches? vacation home.? Their kids, Kaya, 9, and Zade, 7, can hop on their bikes and ride around the fishing pond, go to the Family Barn for bowling or walk to the sports pavilion, Chona says.? ?It?s a great place to try out their independence mode.? Having young kids and living in LA, we are not in a place where they can go down the street and get an ice cream.?

The Hirsches chose a long, skinny ?challenge? lot, but it had expansive views and was south facing, Wooley adds.

Taking advantage of this exposure, the home was outfitted with Sierra Pacific Windows? new bi-fold system that allows a wall of glass doors to completely open to the outside.? In the Hirsch home, this connects the indoors with an outdoor fire pit and a heated dining area.? They?ve sat by the fire pit and watched two bald eagles swoop into the pond, Chona says.

Within the great room is a variety of entertainment areas: a TV space, a game nook, a conversation pit by the fireplace, a large kitchen, an area with a 12-person expandable dining table and an office with panels that open to the great room.? There?s a pantry off the kitchen as well as a covered barbecue area.

?The great room needed to be great,? Chona says.? ?For my husband?s 40th, we had 30 friends and it feels a lot more spacious than it is.?

A transitional space connects the great room to the entry and garage and includes a laundry room with a row of individual lockers for each family member?s sports gear.? There are high ceilings throughout the home with radiant heated floors to keep it cozy and warm.

The home fits 4 bedrooms and 4.5 baths into 3,192 square feet, plus a two-car garage.? The upstairs interiors are hardy and durable, with barnwood and contemporary furniture.? Small bedrooms were intentional, Chona adds, to draw family and guests out of their rooms and downstairs.? Each room has its own bath, however.? The children?s room sleeps seven with a wall of bunk beds, including one cubby bunk reached by a rope ladder, a response to the Hirsches? request to be able to accommodate three families at once.

?There?s not a lot of sleeping that goes on there,? Chona jokes.? In the center of the bedrooms is a kids? TV area.? Throughout the upstairs, there?s a delightful array of nooks and crannies, steps to guest rooms, popped-out window seats and built-in, custom furniture and cabinetry milled or welded in Mark Tanner Construction?s in-house design shop.

?It was all done with a budget in mind, as well as a desire for easy upkeep,? Tanner says, ?but the Hirsches allowed us to come across with different ideas and push the creativity.?

Chona says the home was built for less than $400 a square foot because Tanner?s firm was able to create elements such as a stainless steel sink and reclaimed wood doors.? The economy also lowered the cost of building, and Tanner had a knack for the serendipitous discovery of low cost, quality materials.

?So far, it has completely lived up to all the expectations,? says Chona.? ?There?s nothing we would change.?

Weight Loss and Training Tips ~ Extra Health and Fitness

Losing Weight and Gaining Muscle

Pretty much all of the fitness goals I see with my clients involve losing weight or gaining muscle (or both). So what's the most effective approach to both?
This article takes a no-nonsense look at the basic principles of weight loss and muscle gain. As you'll see, the two goals can go hand-in-hand, and are actually most effective when done together.
Let's take a closer look?
Losing Weight
Effective, healthy weight loss is essentially dependent on a few basic principles. I'm not a big fan of fad diets, as they're difficult to maintain long-term. Instead, I recommend some simple, basic lifestyle changes that will get you eating healthy and losing weight. Here's what you need to do:
  • Reduce sugar, fat, and salt intake. This one seems pretty basic, but you really need to take it seriously. Fat may be the obvious one, but keep in mind that some fats are good for losing weight, like those found in avocados, fish, and nuts. Sugar is bad for weight loss because much of it is converted into fat, while salt retains water and makes you look bloated.
  • Increase your protein intake. Protein is a big factor in losing weight. This is because protein keeps you feeling full longer, and also supports lean muscle mass, which naturally increases your resting metabolism.?
  • Train More Intense. Moving your body and burning calories and fat is absolutely essential to losing weight. I do not support dieting alone, as it does not reflect an overall healthy lifestyle. Whether it's cardio, weight training, or both, you need to get regular exercise and you need to add variety to your workouts!?
Gaining Muscle
For many people, gaining muscle is just as difficult as losing weight. But it's another common fitness goal, whether for improving your athletic ability or your physical appearance. Here are some basic must-do's for gaining muscle:
  • Lift weights. This is the obvious one, but you really need to take your resistance training routine seriously if you want to see real results. I recommend working out at least 4 days a week to see significant results, and make sure you change things up once in a while.
  • Eat more protein. Protein is one of the most important factors in gaining lean muscle mass. It's estimated that you need to consume 1 gram of protein for every pound of body weight daily in order to add on muscle mass.
  • Give your muscles time to recover. Recovery is an essential step for gaining muscle. Make sure you're giving each muscle group 48 hours between workouts to recover.?
Losing Weight and Gaining Muscle: A Synergistic Effect
The ideal fitness goal should include both weight loss (or fat loss, specifically) and muscle gain.
The main reason for this is that increasing your muscle mass will increase your resting metabolic rate, which means your body will naturally burn more fat and calories over the long-term (not just during your workouts).
If we flip things around, a healthy, balanced diet is key to gaining muscle. Not only do you need to ensure adequate protein intake, but working out also depletes your body of important vitamins and nutrients. This is why a healthy diet is so important.
And the best part of it all? If you're working out hard and gaining muscle, you can actually eat more! This will make your dieting efforts much, much easier!

Facebook buying photo-share app Instagram for $1 billion

Facebook and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, above, said they plan to keep Instagram running independently, a departure from their tendency to buy small startups and integrate the technology.

?

ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK ? Facebook is spending $1 billion to buy the photo-sharing company Instagram in the social network?s largest acquisition ever.

Instagram lets people apply filters to photos they snap with their mobile devices and share them with friends and strangers. Some of the filters make the photos look as if they?ve been taken in the 1970s or on Polaroid cameras.

?This is an important milestone for Facebook because it?s the first time we?ve ever acquired a product and company with so many users,? CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page. ?We don?t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all.?

Facebook said it plans to keep Instagram running independently. That?s a departure from its tendency to buy small startups and integrate the technology ? or shut them down altogether just so it can hire talented engineers and developers.

?We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience,? Zuckerberg wrote. ?We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.?

Facebook is paying cash and stock for San Francisco-based Instagram and hiring its roughly 10 employees. The deal is expected to close by the end of June.

Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook is expected to complete its initial public offering of stock next month. Getting Instagram is big win for Facebook as it works to harness people?s growing obsession with their mobile devices and sharing every moment of their life.

Instagram was only available Apple devices until recently. An app for Android devices was released last week.

Safer manual handling at work ? Simple Business Solutions

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the main cause of occupational injury in Great Britain, affecting 1 million people every year and costing society ?5.7 billion. MSDs are aches, pains and problems associated with the muscles, joints and tendons, and are often caused by poor manual handling practice. Manual handling is defined as transporting or supporting a load through hand or bodily force, and although it is easy to only associate manual handling in the workplace with physical labour jobs, the reality is almost every position involves some aspect of manual handling.

Consider you own a restaurant; staff may be required to carry plates of food, transport kitchen equipment (stacks of pans and plates can be extremely heavy), or move tables and chairs. The retail industry contains manual handling in the workplace through the movement of stock and putting out items, and even the seemingly less strenuous office job often involves carrying documents, moving laptops, PCs or other technological equipment or even lifting the kettle to make a cup of tea. All of these are manual handling tasks which have the potential to one day cause an MSD.

Employers find themselves losing millions of pounds from sick days, hiring extra staff and compensation cases as a result of MSDs caused by poor manual handling at work every year, when staff find themselves suffering deliberating short or long-term health problems. Manual handling courses are an easy way to avoid these serious consequences, as well as helping you to meet health and safety legislation.
Manual handling at work is covered in legislation in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. The official Governments Health and Safety Executive website states that health and safety information and training should be supplemented as necessary with more specific information and training on manual handling injury risks and prevention as part of the risk reduction policies, and it is the employers duty to ensure this manual handling in the workplace training is carried out. Manual handling courses are extremely effective at reducing the chance of an accident caused by manual handling in the workplace.

Modern manual handling courses are cost-effective, time-effective, easy to arrange and monitor and even enjoyable. Although you may feel that you and your staff already understand the basic principles of manual handling such as lifting from the knees, there are likely to be many factors which are not often considered when lifting or supporting weights. Manual handling courses will give a basic understanding of the back, and explain the importance of planning, and how to plan, a clear route before any item is transported.
Training courses can be conducted through CD-ROMs or online at any time during the working day or at home, and they can even be completed in sections, with progress saved and available to be monitored. These modern ways to understand manual handling in the workplace offer an easy way for employers to promote safer manual handling in the workplace and meet health and safety legislation effectively.

Midwest quakes linked to oil and gas drilling

Oil and gas production may explain a sharp increase in small earthquakes in the nation's midsection, a new study from the U.S. Geological Survey suggests.

The rate has jumped sixfold from the late 20th century through last year, the team reports, and the changes are "almost certainly man-made."

Outside experts were split in their opinions about the report, which is not yet published but is due to be presented at a meeting later this month.

The study said a relatively mild increase starting in 2001 comes from increased quake activity in a methane production area along the state line between Colorado and New Mexico. The increase began about the time that methane production began there, so there's a "clear possibility" of a link, says lead author William Ellsworth of the USGS.

The increase over the nation's midsection has gotten steeper since 2009, due to more quakes in a variety of oil and gas production areas, including some in Arkansas and Oklahoma, the researchers say.

Fracking at fault? Probably not
It's not clear how the earthquake rates might be related to oil and gas production, the study authors said. They note that others have linked earthquakes to injecting huge amounts of leftover wastewater deep into the earth.

There has been concern about potential earthquakes from a smaller-scale injection of fluids during a process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which is used to recover gas. But Ellsworth said Friday he is confident that fracking is not responsible for the earthquake trends his study found, based on prior studies.

The study covers a swath of the United States that lies roughly west of Ohio and east of Utah. It counted earthquakes of magnitude 3 and above.

Magnitude-3 quakes are mild, and may be felt by only a few people in the upper floors of buildings, or may cause parked cars to rock slightly. The biggest counted in the study was a magnitude-5.6 quake that hit Oklahoma last Nov. 5, damaging dozens of homes. Experts said it was too strong to be linked to oil and gas production.

The researchers reported that from 1970 to 2000, the region they studied averaged about 21 quakes a year. That rose to about 29 a year for 2001 through 2008, they wrote, and the three following years produced totals of 50, 87 and 134, respectively.

'We've seen this' in the West as well
The study results make sense and are probably due to human-made stress in the ground, said Rowena Lohman, a Cornell University geophysicist.

"The key thing to remember is, magnitude-3's are really small," Lohman said. "We've seen this sort of behavior in the western United States for a long time."

Usually, it's with geothermal energy, dams or prospecting. With magnitude-4 quakes, a person standing on top of them would at most feel like a sharp jolt, but mostly don't last long enough to be a problem for buildings, she said.

    4. Explore new realms of science and religion

The idea is to understand how the human-made activity triggers quakes, she said. One possibility is that the injected fluids change the friction and stickiness of minerals on fault lines. Another concept is that they change the below-surface pressure because the fluid is trapped and builds, and then "sets off something that's about ready to go anyway," Lohman said.

But another expert was not convinced of a link to oil and gas operations.

Austin Holland, the Oklahoma state seismologist, said the new work presents an "interesting hypothesis" but that the increase in earthquake rates could simply be the result of natural processes.

Holland said clusters of quakes can occur naturally, and that scientists do not yet fully understand the natural cycles of seismic activity in the central United States. Comprehensive earthquake records for the region go back only a few decades, he said, while natural cycles stretch for tens of thousands of years. So too little is known to rule out natural processes for causing the increase, he said.

PFT: NFL Network expected to let Sapp go

Philadelphia Eagles v Washington RedskinsGetty Images

Last month, when word first broke of the Saints using a bounty system for three years, we pointed out at some point that the targeting of players for injuries will do nothing to make teams more candid about the reporting of existing player injuries.? Now that the audio of Gregg Williams? pre-game comments from January 2012 has been released, with graphic instructions on how to inflict injury on opponents, look for coaches to be even more reluctant to disclose who is hurt and what is hurting them.

As many of you have suggested, it also may be time for the NFL to revisit its injury-reporting policies.? We have long believed that the NFL has constructed a cursory set of injury guidelines in order to create the impression that there is no inside information for folks with gambling interests to attempt to obtain by, for example, offering envelopes full of cash to someone in the organization who knows the truth.? Now that we know Williams was offering envelopes full of cash to players who successfully knocked other players out of games, the NFL may be forced to choose between the lesser of two cash-envelopes evils.

Since the league?s injury-reporting system currently has plenty of flaws that the league doesn?t seem inclined to fix, maybe the NFL should adopt an NHL-style ?upper body?/?lower body? approach to injuries, which would then possibly give folks who plan to target players for injuries a more vague bull?s eye.

Of course, that won?t solve the problem.? There has always been a strategic benefit to knocking key members of the opposing team out of a game.? But most players and coaches have refrained from declaring that reality publicly.

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall pulled back the curtain last September, when Washington was preparing to play the Cowboys and quarterback Tony Romo, who was recovering from a rib injury.? ?I want to get a chance to put my helmet on whatever?s hurt,? Hall said.? ?Romo?s ribs ? I?m going to be asking for some corner blitzes.? If I know Felix Jones? shoulder?s hurt, I?m not going to cut him.? I?m definitely going to try to hit him up high, so that?s just part of it.

?If you know something?s wrong with an opponent, you?re going to try to target in on that,? Hall added.? ?We?re going to try to definitely get as many hats on that team as possible.?

Here?s what I added at the time:? ?Hall isn?t saying anything that football players don?t already think.? Especially at the quarterback position, any opportunity to knock the starter out of the game should be embraced.?

Several Saints fans, grasping for anything that will draw attention away from the stunning comments of their former defensive coordinator, have suggested that what I wrote seven months ago is no different than what Williams said in January.? To that I say, ?Child please.?? The difference is that what I wrote is something that players innately know to be true, and that the line is hopelessly crossed when a man who isn?t putting on a uniform and entering harm?s way commands his troops to, essentially, ?sweep the leg.?

The Saints fans who have been looking for something/anything to cushion the consequences of offering money to inflict injury and/or urging players to inflict specific types of injuries also have overlooked the next paragraph of our story from September 2011:? ?But when it comes to putting a helmet on Romo?s ribs, Hall should be careful not to do it when Romo is in the act of throwing a pass, or when he has just thrown a pass.? Under the rules, Romo is defenseless at those times, and he can?t be hit in the helmet or with a helmet.?

If a player hits another player hard within the confines of the rules and the player who receives the hit can?t continue to play because of it, that?s a traditionally unspoken strategic reality of football.? If, for example, Hall successfully had blasted Romo during the ensuing game and Romo?s backup would have been forced into the fray, the Redskins would have had a better chance to win.

The balance the NFL now has to strike as it tries to change its culture comes from the inherent difference between the things that players and coaches already know ? and the things that coaches and players say openly about the things they know.? As part of that balance, the NFL needs to reconsider whether and to what extent players and coaches should ever know that opponents enter a given game already injured.

In the end, that may be the only way to properly address what was, before March 2, an open secret for the NFL.

What Tony Abbott's family taught him about gay relationships

Voters know that Tony Abbott opposes gay marriage but what he hasn?t been able to share with the electorate until now is the compassion and support he?s shown towards his sister, Christine Forster, since she has come out as a gay woman.

The siblings are extremely close and strikingly similar in appearance and personality but they stand on different sides of the gay marriage debate. The Opposition Leader is a traditionalist who believes marriage is for men and women. Ms Forster is committed to a live-in relationship with her partner, Virginia Edwards.

The two women were photographed together supporting gay marriage at the Lesbians in the (Opera) House concert last year. Ms Forster has tried to change her brother?s mind during spirited discussions at family gatherings but she has not stepped into the public arena. He?s the politician, she?s a private citizen who had hoped to stay out of the spotlight.

Both knew media interest was inevitable, given the intense passion around gay marriage and the gathering momentum for reform. They spoke to The Weekend Australian Magazine about the collision between their public and personal lives.

?In response to the media interest, I have decided to publicly confirm that I am gay and am in a committed, live-in relationship,? Ms Forster said. ?My brother and I have always had a strong relationship and he respects and supports me and my lifestyle choices.?

The Writing Wheel: Speaking up for the lowly hyphen

I've been teaching a lot lately to business professionals, doing writing refresher courses, mostly helping them hone their skills. Each group has included a discussion of the hyphens and dashes and I thought I include that conversation here.

There are three pieces of horizontal punctuation. The hyphen, the briefest of the lines, joins words together and is often used between numbers to indicate a range (of years, pages, dollar amounts). The en dash, so-called because it is the width of the en in the font you are using, is a little longer than the hyphen and has a conservative use limited to the negative sign in math or science.(More liberally, it is used in place of the em dash.) The em dash, again the width of the em in the font you are using, is the longest of the three lines and is used in place of commas, either to create an informal look or tone or to create a more dramatic visual effect on the page. En dashes are typically formatted with spaces before and after; the em dash calls for no space before or after.

Hyphenating compounds that are forming adjectives was the topic of our conversation during the recent courses. I'm a strong proponent of reader-focused writing and using the hyphen correctly helps speed comprehension for all readers. A good example of this use of the hyphen occurs in the preceding sentence: reader-focused writing. The two words "reader" and "focused" are not used individually to describe writing; rather, they are used as a combination, as a unit of meaning. When this unit precedes the noun it describes, it should be hyphenated for clarity. Here are some common examples:

a long-term issue
an agreed-upon condition
a money-based conversation
a cancer-related treatment
a part-time worker

Note that when these words don't precede the noun, they are usually not hyphenated.

I'm in it for the long term.
We agreed upon the condition.
The conversation was based on money.

However: He works part-time. His treatment was cancer-related.

Here's my favorite example.

He's a short distance runner.
He's a short-distance runner.

Both sentences are correct. The meaning differs. Email me if you don't see how (sobertruths@gmailcom) and I'll tell you.

Movie Review: 'Titanic 3-D' ? CBS Philly

("Titanic," re-released in 3-D, stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.)

(?Titanic,? re-released in 3-D, stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.)

By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? It was the best film of its year, 1997, this towering epic, a romantic tragedy featuring an enthralling, fictitious love story told against the backdrop of the mythical real-life luxury liner disaster.

The record-setting performance at the box office of what was then the most expensive production ever made it, at the time, the highest-grossing juggernaut in movie history, which was amazing but understandable and well-deserved.

4 Movie Review: Titanic 3 D

(4 stars out of 4!)

And its 14 Oscar nominations and 11 Oscars, including one for best picture and one for best director winner James Cameron, were more than merited.

Now, fifteen years later, it?s back in re-release, in all its three-hour-and-fifteen-minute splendor, on the 100th anniversary of the real-life sinking, in a conversion to the 3-D format that beckons viewers to theatres to see it on the big screen once again.

And it?s well worth the trip.

This is the tale, as if you didn?t know, of the ill-fated maiden voyage of the colossal ocean liner that struck an iceberg in April of 1912, taking with it the lives of 1,500 of its passengers.

Cameron?s tribute to them is both intimate and epic, a sweeping drama that stunningly recreates the doomed vessel and the unthinkable disaster in astonishingly vivid detail, its three-hours-plus running time seeming like a lot less.? Despite the film?s length, there?s no slack whatsoever.

Virtually every moment of this unsinkable movie about a sinkable ship is either historically fascinating or emotionally enveloping.

Leonardo DiCaprio is Jack, a penniless artist returning to America from England on the Titanic?s maiden voyage.? Oscar nominee Kate Winslet is Rose, returning home to Philadelphia for her impending marriage to a wealthy fianc?.

When Rose meets Jack in steerage and invites him to dine at her first-class table, Jack borrows a tux but remains a novelty for his well-heeled new companions, as the ship continues toward the iceberg that we know is in its path.

As far as the 3-D conversion goes, although it undoubtedly would have been preferable to shoot the movie in 3-D in the first place, this dynamic offering joins Cameron?s Avatar and Martin Scorsese?s Hugo as the triumvirate that stand above their 3-D brethren and vividly make the case for the superiority of 3-D over 2-D viewing.

Or maybe they?re just the exceptions that prove the rule that 3-D is nearly always a letdown, an unnecessary add-on for the gullible viewer.

So don?t go just for the 3-D element.? It enhances the experience ever so slightly, even though it also slightly dims the film?s brightness. But it?s hardly a necessity.? Just see it on the big screen, especially if you have not before done so, because that?s the way larger-than-life movies ? especially any great movie, which this magnificent achievement most certainly is ? are meant to be seen.

Two things you may be more aware of this time than you were in the past:? first, that this is no big, impersonal Hollywood project, but the unique, obsessive vision of a moviemaker whose stamp is on every last frame.

And, second, that the class conflict that is such a prominent theme throughout the narrative registers at this point in time not so much as rich versus poor but as 1 percent versus 99 percent.

Anyway, pardon us while we go overboard for all 4 stars out of 4.? If any great movie deserves to be seen in a form as titanic as possible, it?s Titanic.

New Mom, New Aches ? Health and Fitness 101

Having worked as a physical therapist for 10 years, I know how new activities can tax the body. ?I know the importance of good body mechanics and keeping a spine in the best neutral position. ?I know that fatigue and not feeling well can create poor posture.

However, as a new mom, my PT mind shut down as I focused on getting my daughter, Charlise, off to the very best start in life ? which meant mastering breastfeeding, sleeping in 1-2 hour stints, holding her for long periods of time until she calmed ? and when I did get time to focus on my body it was about caring for my healing pelvic floor, preventing engorgement in my breasts, or getting a quick shower or meal in.

Into the second week of Charlie?s life, I was experiencing severe headaches, shoulder pain and weakness, jaw pain, light sensitivity, and full body diffuse joint pains. ?The headaches were getting so bad I had trouble concentrating and would nearly become nauseous from the pain. ?As a breastfeeding mom, I was afraid to take any medication besides ibuprofen. I was taking nearly the maximum medically recommended dose, and it wasn?t even touching my pain.

Oddly, it was my doctor who recommended (yes to this 10 yr PT) that I seek out the help of a physical therapist. ?DUH? ?Why I did not come across this idea, I am not sure, but I immediately called my coworkers at Alpine PT to get scheduled. ?By that afternoon, they had an opening come up and got me in.

As soon as Angela (aka Alpine?s spine ninja) started working on my upper neck (C1 and C2) I knew I was in the right place. ?She performed an extensive examination, then started with some manual joint mobilization of my upper neck followed by some muscle energy techniques and stretching. She then addressed poor scapular control of my left shoulder. ?She finished by reminding me of proper positioning and some very basic yet super effective home exercises. ?Needless to say, I went to Alpine PT with a high 8/10 headache, neck pain, and left shoulder issues. After just after an hour with Angela, I left with close to a 2/10 pain level and felt SO MUCH better!

I was so happy to return to my house where my daughter was meeting many of our good friends. I felt renewed and reset. Moreover, I?could now be there for Charlise 100% now, and I could enjoy my visitors and this very special time in our lives.

I will be working on a handout for those new moms out there, a handout that will include exercises and recommendations to prevent this type of injury and also to remind them that even one PT visit can help dramatically! ?Someone told me I would learn more than I thought possible as a parent. This is only the beginning, I?m sure!
