Compulsive Eating Habits are Easier to Break with Health Programs ...

One of the number one problems in America is obesity triggered often by compulsive overeating. When you have this disease, thoughts of food and the need to eat in private are two of the many symptoms. Binging is a common problem with compulsive overeating, and those suffering often eat until they feel sick and do so at a quickened pace. Food binges usually bring about feelings of depression, guilt and shame. Like other addictions, food addictions are just as harmful and hard to break.

There are two different types of compulsive eating. The first is when a person overeats in one sitting, often in a very manic and frenzied manner. This type of food stuffing is known as binging. The second form, snacking all day, is known as grazing. This type of compulsive eating can actually be good for the body if done using the right types of foods. Reaching for unhealthy, comfort foods however, is much more likely. Both types of compulsive eating lead to a daily over-consumption of calories. In turn, this leads to high cholesterol, diabetes, heart diseases, hypertension and other long-term health problems. Depression, guilt, and other mental problems often arise as well.

Though the specific cause for compulsive eating is different for each person, most causes stem from feelings of depression, anxiety, stress, loneliness, or just plain boredom. Learning to control these emotions is the first step in controlling food addiction. In some cases, trigger foods cause serotonin to be released in the brain, a calming chemical that can influence mood. When you can find ways to release this chemical, without food, you will be more easily able to avoid compulsive eating. Learn a new skill or develop a hobby, such as meditation, sewing, yoga, painting, etc.

In many cases, outside therapeutic help is needed to find the root of the problem. Some people will seek help by themselves, but some need the gentle nudge of a loved one. Privacy is an indicator that there may be binge eating going on. A consciousness of emotions can help a person struggling with this disease.

Control of emotion is an important step in overcoming compulsive eating. When emotions are left unchecked, unhealthy amounts of stress, fatigue, depression and anxiety often occur. Options should be explored for each person. Controlling and filling the emotional void left when not eating is a great way to ensure a healthy and rewarding long-life.
