Active Shopping on Foot at the Newburyport Farmers Market
Thank you for all of your sweet comments regarding our car situation. Although it?s a bummer that our car is out of commission, it motivated us to do all of our shopping by foot and bike!
First stop, the Newburyport Farmer?s Market.
As usual, I was captivated by all of the vibrant fresh produce.
HOLY YUM, look at the leaves on that rainbow chard!
While being an annoying food paparazzo browsing, I spotted a stand that offered conventional fresh cucumbers as well as fresh pickling cucumbers.
Never having tasted a fresh pickling cucumber before, I asked the friendly vendor about the the differences between the two varieties. He told me that the conventional cucs have softer flesh and slightly bitter peel while the pickling cucumbers have a crisper texture.
We decided to buy one of each so that we can compare.
I also spied the famous New England apple cider donuts that Tina raves about
and some delectable shortcakes.
Although I refrained from buying the shortcakes, I did snag a carton of blueberries that?s as big as my head!
Active Shopping by Bike!
After stashing our farmer?s market goodies at home, we set out on our bikes to Market Basket, a New England grocery store that is known for its amazing prices.
I forget to wear my Garmin but I would estimate that the store is 3 to 4 miles from our apartment.
It didn?t take me long to see why my mother-in-law raves about Market Basket?s prices.
2 jars of Teddie?s Peanut Butter for $5
1lb frozen wild caught fish ranging from $4.49 to $5.59
5 boxes of Whole Wheat Penne for $5
There were tons more deals but I don?t want to photoblog you to death!
After grabbing a bunch of staple items, we somehow managed to fit them onto our handlebars and backs, and headed home.
We celebrated our active shopping trips by enjoying a market fresh lunch.
Smoked herring, whole wheat oatmeal bread, green salad with onion greens, carrots, lettuce, and pickling cucumbers followed by a Market Basket oatmeal raisin cookie. I LOVED the pickling cucumber so the conventional cuc has some catching up to do!
I would love to hear from you?
Have you ever eaten a fresh pickling cucumber?
What sales are you most excited to see at the grocery store?
We finally have internet so I can?t wait to catch up with all of your blogs and lives over the next couple days. Thank you so much for your patience during our travels!
Don?t forget to stop by tomorrow for this week?s Monday Motivation post!
