Jordy Smith off to a successful start at the Quiksilver Pro France

South Africa?s Jordy Smith successfully secured his place in the third round at the Quiksilver Pro France, the seventh of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which resumed at La Graviere in Hossegor, France, on Sunday, September 30.

He put on an impressive performance in the 10th heat of the opening round to get the better of Brazil?s Heitor Alves and Australia?s Adam Melling, sending the two surfers into the second round to surf again for a place in Round 3.

The latest day of the competition once again saw three-to-five foot waves on offer at the main event site of La Graviere. The conditions hardly seemed like they would allow the heavy-weights of surfing to cut loose, thus making the battles more dependent on experience and perseverance.

The spectators expected to get treated to high-intensity action as both they as well as the surfers themselves were fully aware of the fact that victory was not going to come easy in the conditions that they were going to be competing in.

Pitted against Alves and Melling in the 10th heat, Smith had his work cut out for him. While there was not any pressure of elimination hanging over their heads, the surfers were expected to put in their 100 percent to try and jump into the third round without having to surf in the second round.

As the battle got underway, smith got down to business without wasting any time. The South African powerhouse locked a relatively juicy wave in the opening minutes of the heat to unload a series of tricks, earning an average score of 5.83 from the judges for the effort.

Almost halfway through the heat, Smith managed to add an additional 6.50 points to his account, thus finishing with a two-wave total of 12.33 points.

Alves collected a couple of scores in the four-point range to eventually finish with a heat-total of 8.63 points.

Melling looked completely lost out there in the sea. After struggling throughout the course of the three-man battle, he eventually finished with a heat-total of 2.47 points, which included a 1.27 and 1.20-point ride.
