Downtown Geneva plays host to international film festival ? Geneva ...

Scott Rolf has a real passion for filmmaking.

The camera assistant?s credits include myriad commercials, TV shows and movies, including ?The Dark Knight? and ?Transformers.? He?s worked in the film industry since 1989 when he got his start as a production assistant.

But the job Rolf has immersed himself in recently doesn?t involve capturing action for the small or silver screen, but rather playing the role of executive director for the Geneva Film Festival.

The fifth annual event, which takes place Thursday through Saturday, is already more successful than its predecessors in one important way, Rolf said.

?We got 107 submissions from 18 different countries. That?s more submissions than any other year,? Rolf said. ?Of those, we selected 33 from 16 different countries.?

Filmmakers entered their pieces for consideration via withoutabox.com, an online service for both independent filmmakers and festivals seeking their work.

The films that will be showcased fit several different categories, including narrative and documentary feature ? which must have a running time over 40 minutes ? as well as narrative, documentary, animated and student short.

They include the story of seven Vietnamese women in the full-length feature ?Pearls of the Far East? and the whimsical ?Luna,? an animated short in which a caterpillar and moth entertain a bit of romance. There?s the German narrative short ?Amok,? a look at the hard choices the victims of a school shooting must make and the dark humor in the 1960-set student short ?Hadley TK-421.?

The festival had three judges for each category, and many of those judges work on the technical side of the film industry, Rolf said.

Judges, like Colleen Lindl, looked at technical aspects of around 20 student film submissions, evaluating cinematography, sound and editing, as well as each pieces? ability to tell a meaningful story.

?I look for the integrity of the story,? said Lindl, who works in Los Angeles as a camera assistant for the NBC show ?Up All Night.? ?Is the acting pulling me out of the story or bringing me into it?

?As the Geneva Film Fest grows older it seems the entries are becoming more and more impressive,? Lindl added. ?There is some major talent that is up and coming; people to watch out for.?

The film festival ? a division of the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission ? will also showcase short films that have been honored in the Emerging Cinematography Awards, which recognizes rising cinematographers from around the world. These 10 pieces will all be screened Saturday, March 31.

Festival films will be shown on two screens at State Street Dance Studio, 319-1/2 W. State St. in Geneva, in rooms that can seat 80 and 50 people respectively. A weekend pass to all of the screenings is $10. A ticket to one screening is $3. Each lasts about an hour and a half and includes different kinds of films. Blocks will be arranged in part by their subject matter.

Festival judges have already determined the winning films for each category, as well as additional honors like Best Cinematography.

Tickets are available at a number of Geneva retailers and will also be available at the festival. To learn more and to watch trailers of the featured films, visit genevafilmfestival.org.
