Sorakujira ? The Art of Failure (and Everything Undiscovered) | Indie ...

Pop punk is sweeping the nation.? It?s fun, catchy, and really makes people get up to dance around.? So what is that sets a band apart in a genre that is flooding with new artists?? One word: experimentation.? By adding a little electronica with a video game feel and a dash of hardcore screaming, Sorakujira approaches the pop punk trend with a fresh feel.

Sorakujira, pronounced SORA-KOOJEERAH according to the bands Facebook page, hails from Emily, Minnesota.? They have been rocking together since January, 2011 but in that short amount of time they have gelled well as a band.? Ben Drake takes the vocal lead while playing rhythm guitar.? On lead guitar is James Dotzler, who crafts the feel of each song so well.? Jesse Drake, drums, and Jon Roring on the bass round out the lineup.

On January 7, 2012, Sorakujira released The Art of Failure (and Everything Undiscovered).? It is a very apparent pop punk album with influences from Blink 182 and Reliant K.? In fact on the track ?Apologies,? the guitar melodies sound as if they could have been lifted directly from a Blink album.? Ben flexes his vocals with some well-rounded
melodies.? The band strays from the pop punk image though with a hardcore feel as Ben screams.? While he has a voice that can pull of the scream well it doesn?t quite fit with the pop feel of the rest of the song.? Contrast in a song can be amazing and this is a strong case for it, there just seems to be something missing.

?Can?t Stop? is easily one of the best songs on the album.? The transition from melodies
to screaming works much better in this arrangement.? Jesse provides some great beats in a true punk drummer fashion.? James? guitar solo at the end of the song demonstrates that this band is about making epic music.

James takes the lead vocals on ?Help Me? and ?Real You.?? His vocals aren?t quite as strong so these tracks end up feeling slightly flat.? Musically though these two tracks showcase? the bands ability to compose great rock pieces.

The ?8-bit inspired? sounds work well in songs such as ?The River? and ?These Words.?
The listener immediately imagines they are a pizza loving plumber about to enter a castle and fight the mighty Bowser.? Most of the album has an upbeat feel but the band does dabble in slower songs such as the last track ?Everything.??This song is a stark contrast to the rest of the album.

After the first listen most people will find it hard not to sing along with these fun songs.
Lyrically they aren?t the strongest but what they lack in depth they make up for in catchy melodies.? Hopefully with maturity will come more complex lyrics.? If Sorakujira continues playing together they could easily develop a following among the young punk crowd.? It is inspiring to hear young musicians experiment and that?s exactly what they did with The Art of Failure (and Everything Undiscovered).
