Sunset + Vine beats ITV to ?100m BT sports contract

The deal, to deliver live coverage of Premier League football and Premiership rugby union for the telecoms giant from next summer, ranks as one of the most valuable production contracts any independent producer has won in recent years. It is thought to be second only to Endemol?s deal to televise Big Brother for Five.

Sunset + Vine, part of Welsh production group Tinopolis, is a sports specialist that produced Channel 4?s coverage of the London Paralympic Games, but it had still been considered an outsider until Wednesday.

?BT liked our ideas,? said Jeff Foulser, the company?s chairman. ?We can now put our creative talents into delivering top class and innovative coverage for BT Sports? major rights acquisitions.?

BT made a surprise grab for the rights for Premier League football this summer, and has now spent around ?1bn on new sports rights to help it significantly boost its television offering. It wants to take on rival pay-TV operator BSkyB, which has spent the past few years poaching BT?s telephone and broadband customers.
