Tips for a healthy skin | What is How to

Some women are just blessed with nice glowing skin, but what about all the others that have to work hard and take special care to have their skin look healthy. You don?t really have to wait for your skin to start showing sun damage or wrinkles to begin taking proper care of it. In fact, the earlier you start doing it the better it is. There are many smart moms that teach their daughters the skin care routines they themselves follow, from a very young age. This ensures that the daughters make the routine part of their daily rituals and inculcate the habit of taking care of their skin. If your mom hasn?t passed down any skincare secrets, and you find yourself wondering what to do or even considering a particular skin treatment, here are a few simple tips you can follow to make all the difference to your skin and also the way you feel.

You will find this first tip in almost every article about healthy skin, so start following this skincare routine today. There are four steps to this. Cleansing, exfoliating, toning, and moisturizing. No matter what type of skin you have doing these things is a must. Also, ensure that the products you use are hypo-allergic, not expired, and are of good quality.

Exercise and proper diet can help you look young and vibrant for years, so watch what you eat and make sure you get at least three hours of cardiovascular exercise every week. Eating salads and foods that are high in protein, fiber and vitamins is always better than anything on the menu that is fried or processed. Avoid junk food completely. And make sure your body is always well-hydrated with water or natural fruit juices.

Most of us lead busy lives. The minute we get up and have a shower, our face is slathered with a ton of makeup, which is kept on and even retouched several times until we reach home in the evening or night. If the day has been especially stressful or bad, the makeup stays on all night even. Well, this has to change. You must let your skin breathe and stay clean as much as possible. This translates into avoiding makeup for as long as possible. Using products that let the skin breathe and taking the makeup off as soon as you step into your front door.

People who pick at their skin or constantly touch their face tend to have worse skin than those who don?t. There is a lesson here. Do not touch your face unless absolutely necessary. This will prevent germs and dirt from your hands to not get on your face. Also avoid having your hand on your face while sleeping. You may also keep your skin dirt-free by changing your pillow covers and bed sheets from time to time.

Dandruff can be a major cause in having skin problems. Thus, it is imperative that you get the proper skin treatment or medication for it in case you cannot do anything about the scalp condition. In many cases, simply switching to a anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner is enough.

Getting your 8 hours is most essential for healthy and beautiful skin. Stress-free sleep that is relaxing and rejuvenating can do wonders for your skin and overall health. To get proper sleep you must make sure that your bedroom is pitch dark and there is no sound. If your neighborhood is noisy and the blinds still let street lights in, get a pair of earmuffs or earplugs and go out shopping for thicker blinds.

Skin aging can happen due to sun damage and that?s why it is important to do whatever you can to protect it. Make using a sunscreen lotion a habit. Also use sunglasses or a sun umbrella to protect your body and eyes from the harmful rays.

Writing has always been a habit for Joe, who has over the years been a freelance writer for a number of websites, magazines and a local newspaper. He likes writing about real estate, diamonds, fitness, medical treatments, Skincare and insurance. His blogs are aimed to be informative and helpful. Having a family member practicing cosmetology, he also writes about various skin treatments available on the market today.

Marine plants can flee to avoid predators: First observation of predator avoidance behavior by phytoplankton

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Scientists at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography have made the first observation of a predator avoidance behavior by a species of phytoplankton, a microscopic marine plant. Susanne Menden-Deuer, associate professor of oceanography, and doctoral student Elizabeth Harvey made the unexpected observation while studying the interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton.

Their discovery will be published in the September 28 issue of the journal PLOS ONE.

"It has been well observed that phytoplankton can control their movements in the water and move toward light and nutrients," Menden-Deuer said. "What hasn't been known is that they respond to predators by swimming away from them. We don't know of any other plants that do this."

While imaging 3-dimensional predator-prey interactions, the researchers noted that the phytoplankton Heterosigma akashiwo swam differently in the presence of predators, and groups of them shifted their distribution away from the predators.

In a series of laboratory experiments, Menden-Deuer and Harvey found that the phytoplankton not only flee when in the presence of the predatory zooplankton, but they also flee when in water that had previously contained the predators. They found only a minimal effect when the phytoplankton were exposed to predators that do not feed on phytoplankton.

"The phytoplankton can clearly sense the predator is there. They flee even from the chemical scent of the predator but are most agitated when sensing a feeding predator," said Menden-Deuer.

When the scientists provided the phytoplankton with a refuge to avoid the predator -- an area of low salinity water that the predators cannot tolerate -- the phytoplankton moved to the refuge.

The important question these observations raise, according to Menden-Deuer, is how these interactions affect the survival of the prey species.

Measuring survival in the same experiments, the researchers found that fleeing helps the alga survive. Given a chance, the predators will eat all of the phytoplankton in one day if the algae have no safe place in which to escape, but they double every 48 hours if they have a refuge available to flee from predators. Fleeing makes the difference between life and death for this species, said Menden-Deuer.

"One of the puzzling things about some phytoplankton blooms is that they suddenly appear," she said. "Growth and nutrient availability don't always explain the formation of blooms. Our observation of algal fleeing from predators is another mechanism for how blooms could form. Amazingly, looking at individual microscopic behaviors can help to explain a macroscopic phenomenon."

The researchers say there is no way of knowing how common this behavior is or how many other species of phytoplankton also flee from predators, since this is the first observation of such a behavior.

"If it is common among phytoplankton, then it would be a very important process," Menden-Deuer said. "I wouldn't be surprised if other species had that capacity. It would be very beneficial to them."

In future studies, she hopes to observe these behaviors in the ocean and couple it with genetic investigations.

Amanda Bynes: A Timeline of Her Legal Troubles - The Hollywood ...

Jason Merritt/Getty Images

Amanda Bynes pleaded not guilty to two counts of hit-and-run on Thursday, marking just the latest development in a string of driving-related troubles for the actress over the past several months.

Bynes, whose career launched on Nickelodeon and on the TV sitcom What I Like About You, has starred in such films as Easy A, Hairspray, What a Girl Wants and She's the Man. But over the past several months, the 26-year-old has generated more headlines for her legal issues than her acting.

PHOTOS: 6 Stars Immune to Bad Reviews

Below is a timeline of her recent woes:

March 7, 2012: Bynes is pulled over for allegedly talking on her cell phone. She then allegedly fled the scene before the officer finished writing her ticket. She wasn't arrested and reportedly went to the police station later that day to sign her ticket.

April 4, 2012: Bynes is arrested for DUI. The 26-year-old actress is reportedly pulled over around 3 a.m. in West Hollywood after trying to pass a police car in her BMW and side-swiping the vehicle. Bynes allegedly refuses to take a Breathalyzer or drug test at the scene of the accident and is taken into custody. She is released from jail at 10:30 a.m. Her bail had been set at $5,000.

June 5, 2012: Bynes is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in relation to her April arrest. Immediately following her hearing, Bynes takes to Twitter to enlist the help of President Obama. ?I don?t drink,? she writes in a tweet addressed to @BarackObama. ?Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don?t hit and run. The end.?

STORY: Amanda Bynes Arrested for DUI?

June 6, 2012: Bynes pleads not guilty to driving under the influence. She does not appear in Beverly Hills Superior Court but dispatches her attorney. She faces a maximum of six months in jail.

August 4, 2012: Bynes allegedly rear-ends a driver on L.A.'s Ventura Boulevard, inflicting $800 worth of damage; according to what the driver told police, Bynes sees no problem with the car and drives away without exchanging insurance information or allowing for a police call to assess the situation. Bynes argues that the two both agreed there was minimal damage.

Sept. 4, 2012: Bynes is charged with hit-and-run in connection with the April and August crashes.

Sept. 6, 2012: A city attorney's spokesperson tells the Los Angeles Times that Bynes faces up to a year in jail for her two hit-and-run accidents. The same day, the California Department of Motor Vehicles suspends Bynes driver's license.

Sept. 16, 2012: Bynes' black BMW is impounded after she is pulled over and cited for driving with a suspended license.

Sept. 21, 2012: Bynes is charged with driving on a suspended license.

Sept. 27, 2012: Bynes pleads not guilty to two counts of hit-and-run and is due back in court Oct. 19, according to TMZ. If convicted on both counts, she reportedly faces up to a year in jail.

NYC to get 'world's largest' Ferris wheel

AP Photo/Office of the Mayor of New York

This is an artist's rendering of a proposed 625-foot Ferris wheel--billed as the world's largest--planned as part of a retail and hotel complex along the Staten Island waterfront in New York.

By Jennifer Peltz, The Associated Press

The Big Apple is getting another "biggest": The world's biggest Ferris wheel is to be built on Staten Island, in an ambitious attempt to draw tourists to what's sometimes known as the city's "forgotten borough," officials announced Thursday.

The $230 million attraction, to be called the New York Wheel, is to grace a spot overlooking the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and the downtown Manhattan skyline ? a singular view that officials hope will add to the appeal of what they say would be the world's tallest Ferris wheel. The 625-foot-tall structure would swing higher than the Singapore Flyer, the London Eye and a "High Roller" wheel planned in Las Vegas.

"The New York Wheel will be an attraction unlike any other in New York City ? even unlike any other on the planet," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a release.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2014 on the privately financed project, which also includes a 100-shop outlet mall and a 200-room hotel. The grand opening could come by the end of 2015.

While riding the Staten Island Ferry is a staple of many visitors' agendas, the city has long sought to entice tourists off the boat and into Staten Island, the least populous and most remote borough ? one once known for hosting the world's largest landfill.

Australian tourists Leah Field and Adam Lica, for example, were riding the ferry Thursday for its views of the Statue of Liberty. They thought they might have lunch on the Staten Island side but weren't planning to explore further.

"We weren't sure what there is to do there," explained Lica, 32, of Melbourne.

Were there a giant Ferris wheel, would the couple stay to ride it? Probably, he said.

Staten Island has its attractions, including a minor league ballpark and the zoo that hosts Staten Island Chuck, New York's answer to the famous prognosticating groundhog of Punxsutawney, Pa. Chuck bears the dubious distinction of having once bitten Bloomberg.

But Staten Island, the only one of the city's five boroughs not accessible by subway, tends to get overshadowed by its municipal neighbors, so much so that some have at times suggested it secede from the city.

To Staten Island resident Miatta Bryant, the wheel might bring the borough more respect.

"I think it'll be a really good idea," the 26-year-old certified nursing assistant said. "People always say Staten Island is so boring."

The project is expected to bring $500 million in private investment to the borough's St. George waterfront, and the developers will pay the city $2.5 million a year in rent for the land.

Ash Kumra - Co-founder of DreamItAlive.com

Ash Kumra - Co-founder of DreamItAlive.com

Raise money if it will help your business grow, but don?t raise money to build your business!

Ash Kumra is an award-winning entrepreneur and public speaker who was recently recognized by the White House as one of the top 100 young entrepreneurs making an impact on America. Ash is currently a co-founder of DreamItAlive.com, an online community dedicated to guiding people to create, believe and live out their dreams using virtual dreamboards. Ash is also the co-leader of the Startup California Team for Startup America, which was founded by the White House/Steve Case, and he is chairman for southern California-based Tech Coast Venture Network.

Ash has spoken to more than 10,000 people on the subjects of entrepreneurship, social media and branding for many colleges, institutions, and organizations, including the White House, TEDx, Occidental College, Chapman University, UCLA, USC, Concordia University, and UC Irvine Merage Business School. Ash is also a co-founder of digital content distribution agency DesiYou, the 2010 recipient for Best Digital Media Company by the Irvine Entrepreneur Forum. Ash is an active adviser to various consumer internet ventures.

What are you working on right now?

I am currently working on my venture DreamItAlive.com, an online community dedicated to helping people all over the world create, believe and live out their dreams using virtual dreamboards. You can check mine here.

Where did the idea for DreamItAlive.com come from?

One of my founders/partners, Anita Dhaliwal, had an idea of creating an online community where ?dreamers? could share their aspirations, intentions and goals utilizing digital dreamboards. We, along with our other founder/partner Erin Mester, decided the world needs this community so that everyone can manifest their dreams!

What does your typical day look like?

I don?t have a typical schedule time-wise. I focus my days to have a balance of the following three things, with item #1 being 70% of each day:

  1. DreamItAlive.com (my main focus is on strategic partnerships and scaling the business)
  2. Public speaking/writing (I am currently finishing up my upcoming entrepreneurship book scheduled for release this fall 2012)
  3. Advisory work and giving back (I am an adviser to various consumer internet ventures and am helping to lead efforts for various entrepreneurship groups, including Tech Coast Venture Network, the largest Orange County-based entrepreneurship group, Startup California, and the Young Entrepreneurship Council)

How do you bring ideas to life?

I first like to incubate them in a quiet place, often via meditation, to visualize the outcome. I then map them out?sometimes using goal-setting tools and even adding to my own dreamboard. And then I leverage my network and resources to make them happen.

What?s one trend that really excites you?

The current state of entrepreneurship. There?s never been a better time to fulfill your passion and dream venture. There seems to be more available resources, mentors, smart investors and like-minded dreamers and believers with energy to guide you.

What was the worst job you ever had and what did you learn from it?

I don?t have a ?worst job,? since I learn from every experience to do better in the next one and to gain relationships. Clearly, a high-traffic retail store was one of the toughest environments I ever worked in, and I encourage everyone to try it since you have to cater immediately to customers? needs and wants.

If you were to start again, what would you do differently?

Nothing; everything happens for a reason. Every day I learn from the past and focus on how to be excellent moving forward.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Meditate one to two times per day. No matter how busy you are, your soul needs some ?chill? time to reflect, prepare and visualize your dream life.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

I have had many, but one is not pivoting early enough for my first business venture. I let my ego get in the way, and I thought I could overcome this at any cost. While I did pivot later, I made a lot of mistakes in the process to deflect this. I learned that sometimes it?s okay to fail fast and move on.

What is one business idea that you?re willing to give away to our readers?

There is so much opportunity in the e-book format and publishing arena. The fact that almost every major consumer tech company (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Sony, etc.) is creating more tablets and mobile phones for content consumption should tell you this.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you go about it?

Adapt tools like dreamboards and meditation for school curricula. One can?t rise solely on textbooks and structured lessons. Students also need creative time so they can dream. Why else was the term ?American Dream? created?

Tell us a secret.

I love beautiful eyes and the smell of jasmines.

What are your three favorite online tools or resources and what do you love about them?

  1. Linkedin keeps me connected with my network and helps me build relationships to make the world better.
  2. Facebook is a great communication tool for expressing my own dreams and thoughts.
  3. DreamItAlive.com. I think it is obvious, but to summarize, it allows me to help visualize my own purpose in life while helping others to make the world better with theirs.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra. It?s a good segue into ?conscious capitalism??a system where businesses are profitable while simultaneously making the world better.

Three people we should follow on Twitter and why?

  1. Deepak Chopra is the modern-age spiritual business guru.
  2. Tony Robbins. His focus on making you unleash your own passion is great!
  3. Mark Cuban is an entrepreneur?s entrepreneur. His journey to becoming a billionaire is no-nonsense and authentic.

When was the last time you laughed out loud? What caused it?

I laugh out loud literally every hour of my life, when I?m not sleeping. I laugh when I meet like-minded people, create ventures that make the world better, and get to help someone fulfill their dreams. Laughter, to me, is a sign of celebration.

Who is your hero?

Richard Branson. He is so present with what?s needed to make the world better, and he builds ventures that come from his own dreams.

Should you raise money for your business?

Raise money if it will help your business grow, but don?t raise money to build your business!

How do you find your true passion?

It?s the thing that you dream, desire and talk about non-stop. It?s something that doesn?t feel like work!

(AP) ? In presidential politics, everybody's searching for "the moment." The campaigns don't know when or how it will come, but they watch for something ? awkward words, an embarrassing image ? that can break through and become the defining symbol of the other guy's flaws.

Now all eyes will be on the three presidential debates, especially the all-important first one Wednesday night, a perfect incubator for such a moment.

The unpredictable nature of the debates is part of what attracts tens of millions of live-TV viewers. A big blunder or "gotcha" quip is sure to be remembered. And President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney will be fielding questions for 4? hours in all, a long time to stay on message.

"If we have any moment in terms of seeing the true, the real, the unscripted candidate, it's likely to happen on the debate stage," said Mitchell McKinney, a University of Missouri associate professor who studies the presidential match-ups.

It's the all-too-human slips that live on. Think of Al Gore sighing loudly and often, a bored-looking George H.W. Bush checking his watch, or Richard Nixon appearing clammy and tired next to a tanned and rested John F. Kennedy in the first televised debate in 1960.

"Whether it's sighing or looking at your watch, people will remember that. And they'll have a lot of help because the press is going to replay it and replay it and it's going to show up on 'Saturday Night Live,'" said Tad Devine, who was a senior adviser to Gore's campaign. "It becomes part of their daily conversation, and it takes hold."

The killer moments are the ones that seem to verify what voters already suspect, Devine said, usually after weeks or months of priming by the opposing camp.

Romney and Obama know the risk firsthand.

During the GOP primary debates, Romney played into worries that his wealth distances him from ordinary people by offering to back his words with a friendly wager ? a $10,000 bet.

In the 2008 Democratic primaries, Obama reinforced criticism that he's arrogant and aloof. As Hillary Rodham Clinton good-naturedly tried to deflect a question about her likability, Obama cut in. "You're likable enough, Hillary," he said dismissively. He didn't even look up.

A defining moment can sprout anywhere, of course.

For John McCain, it was a Florida campaign rally on Sept. 15, 2008. As Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, the nation's financial system teetered on the brink and stocks tanked, McCain insisted that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong." The Obama campaign jumped on that phrase to portray McCain as oblivious ? and it stuck.

A question from a college student about funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan tripped up John Kerry in 2004. "I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it," Kerry declared. President George W. Bush's campaign had what it needed: the perfect shorthand for Kerry as a flip-flopper.

This year's campaigns already have spent months looking for that one devastating blow. So far the top contender is Romney's secretly recorded dismissal of "47 percent of Americans" who don't pay taxes and depend on government aid. And then there's Obama's "you didn't build that" remark about business owners.

This year's first presidential debate, focused on the economy and the role of government, offers each man a chance to explain away such mistakes ? and the risk of cementing a new one into voters' minds.

Brett O'Donnell is the debate coach credited with teaching Romney how to deflate Newt Gingrich during the Florida primaries. He says that on Wednesday the GOP nominee needs to confront his video-recorded setback head-on and turn it against Obama.

"He has to turn the 47 percent and make sure people understand the reasoning behind that argument, how that's the result of the president's policies," he said. Romney can emphasize the increasing number of people relying on food stamps, unemployment checks and other aid, suggests O'Donnell, who no longer works for the campaign

The big moments don't have to be bad, after all.

It was Republican strategist Lee Atwater who promoted the idea of a moment that defines a candidate's character. He saw a positive one when Vice President George H.W. Bush stood up to CBS anchorman Dan Rather in a live interview about the Iran-Contra scandal. The aggressive performance quashed criticism that Bush was wimpy.

In his 1980 challenge to President Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan pulled off two famous debate lines that helped win a landslide. "There you go again," he quipped when Carter accused him of planning Medicare cuts. And he asked America a question that still echoes today: "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"

Reagan's shaky performance in the first debate of 1984 raised questions about the 73-year-old president's fitness for another term. Next round, when asked about the age issue, Reagan silenced doubters by declaring with a twinkle that he would not "exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience."

At that moment, "the campaign was over," the Democratic nominee, Walter Mondale, later told PBS journalist Jim Lehrer.

Debates rarely yield such total triumphs, however. And they're seldom an election's single deciding factor, scholars such as McKinney say.

President Gerald Ford's insistence in 1976 that "there is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe" undermined confidence in his ability as a Cold War leader. Texas Gov. Rick Perry wiped out his chance at this year's Republican nomination by forgetting the third of three federal agencies he wanted to eliminate. All he could say was, "Oops."

Although it doesn't happen often, McKinney said, "There is a chance to blow it."

Rare Disease Science Challenge your call to action!

If you or a loved one is unlucky enough to be affected by a rare disease then it can be a continued uphill struggle. Your doctor will likely never have seen a case before which means you suffer with symptoms while awaiting diagnosis, and this can sometimes take years. Even when an accurate diagnosis is reached there may be few treatment options; the pharmaceutical companies just aren t interested in developing drugs to treat such a small market. For the majority (>95%) of the 7000 rare diseases there is no FDA approved therapy. Perhaps the cruelest twist of rare diseases, however, is that so many of the patients are young children. The NIH estimates that 50% of rare diseases affect children, and 30% of pediatric cases die before they reach their 5th birthday!

Collectively rare diseases are not rare. The fact is that while a disease might be labeled as rare , the number of persons suffering from one of the thousands of rare diseases is estimated at 10% of the population [1], or approx. 30 million people in the United States and 350 million people globally. Mainstream pharmaceutical companies have long ignored rare diseases. With the increasing de-centralization of scientific research, and the growth of the citizen science movement, however, there has never been a better time to tackle this problem head on. That s exactly what Assay Depot is doing by teaming up with the Rare Genomics Institute ? to bring awareness to the current broken system for diagnosing, treating and curing rare diseases.

The Rare Genomics Institute provides hope to children suffering with a rare disease. Most rare diseases are genetic in nature, caused by a mutation somewhere in the 3.2 billion bases of human DNA. The Rare Genomics Institute uses crowdfunding to pay for sequencing of the sick child s genome and then assembles a network of academic specialists who work together to identify the child s genetic mutation. Now Assay Depot has teamed up with The Rare Genomics Institute to take the process one-step farther, and go on the offensive with the Rare Disease Science Challenge.

The competition is open to researchers, foundations, or everyday people. Families with a child afflicted with a rare disease will have the opportunity to work with a network of academic researchers and use donated research services to develop research proposals tailored to their child?s needs. An expert panel of scientists will evaluate the research proposals with the final winner(s) selected by Facebook voting.

If we can improve the standard of care for just one rare disease we will bring relief to thousands of people, very likely children, who currently suffer. We think that is a dream worth fighting for. I am sure Chris and Hugh Hempel would agree. Their identical twin daughters, Addison and Cassidy, have been diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type C, a rare, incurable and fatal genetic disease that causes progressive neurological deterioration. This week Global Genes, the leading rare and genetic disease patient advocacy organizations in the world, with the Kauffman Foundation is screening the Hempels story in Hollywood and revealing the grim truth; that diagnosing, treating and curing rare disease is moving at a tedious pace, and leaving heart-rending personal accounts in its path.

How can you help?

If you work for a company that offers research services or makes lab consumables, reagents or instruments ask them to get involved. The great thing about sponsorship is that it will cost your company very little, we re not asking for money, just a donation of time or resources. Does your company make antibodies? How about donating some production capacity? Do you sell DNA sequencers, or mass spec instruments? Could you run some samples in your lab for us?

If you put your mind to it there are a multitude of ways your company could get involved for very little cost, and in return get some great publicity, and help a very worthy cause.

For the rest of you please help publicize the Rare Disease Science Challenge, post it, blog it, tweet it, let s do everything we can to get the word out, and be a part of the solution.

Barnes & Noble launches new Nook HD

(AP) ? Barnes & Noble is rolling out two new versions of its Nook tablet with sleek new hardware and a sharper high-definition screen. The bookseller's move heightens the already intense tablet wars heading into the holiday season.

Barnes & Noble said Wednesday that its new Nook HD will come in two sizes, one with a 7-inch screen (measured diagonally), starting at $199, and one with a new 9-inch diagonal screen, called the Nook HD+, starting at $269.

In addition to the new HD screen and a lighter body, Barnes & Noble is also increasing the services the Nook offers, adding a video purchase and rental service, allowing users to maintain different "profiles" and making it easier to browse titles in its book and magazine stores.

New York-based Barnes & Noble, the largest traditional U.S. bookseller, has invested heavily in its Nook e-reader and e-books. In its most recent fiscal quarter, sales of digital content surged 46 percent, but revenue from devices dropped partly due to lower prices. Nook prices in the May-July period were about 23 percent lower than a year ago.

The company is seeking to offset tough competition from online retailers such as Amazon.com, as consumers increasingly move away from traditional books and DVDs to electronic books and streaming video.

The Nook HD is an upgrade to the hardware and services offered by its previous tablets, the Nook Tablet and Nook Color, which Barnes & Noble is phasing out. The company will continue to sell its smaller black-and-white e-reader, called the Nook Simple Touch, for $99, and a backlit Nook Simple Touch for $139. The Nook HD runs on Google's Android 4.0 system and includes Barnes & Noble's own app store and browser.

Tablets are ?once again? expected to be hot items this holiday. The new Nooks come on the heels of Amazon.com's announcement earlier this month that it will offer four new varieties of its Kindle, including a high definition version of its Kindle Fire tablet with an 8.9-inch diagonal screen, which starts at $299. That compares with Apple Inc.'s iPad with a 9.7-inch diagonal screen and $499 starting price.

Apple's iPad is the most popular tablet, and that is not expected to change. Seven out of every 10 tablets sold in the second quarter were iPads, according to IHS iSuppli. Meanwhile Amazon.com has a 4.2 percent share of the tablet market, while Barnes & Noble has a 1.9 percent share, according to iSuppli.

Even so, the category is growing rapidly. An estimated 112.5 million Americans, one-third of U.S. adults, are expected to have tablets by 2016, according to Forrester Research.

And tablet makers are jockeying to gain share on Apple. On specs alone, the new Nook presents a tough choice for consumers seeking a cheap option to the iPad this holiday, analysts say. The 7-inch Nook HD is slightly lighter and narrower, with a sharper display than the similarly priced 7-inch Kindle Fire.

"If the decision the consumer is making is whether to buy based on hardware, these new Nooks will beat out Amazon," said Forrester analyst James McQuivey. "But that's not the decision every consumer is going to make ? hardware is only as good as the services the hardware enables."

So far, Amazon offers more services, McQuivey said, with a bigger app store, and more extensive video library, not to mention Amazon's vast product offerings and its Amazon Prime free-shipping service.

In an attempt to measure up, Barnes & Noble is launching a video service this fall that lets users buy and watch movies and TV shows on their mobile devices and televisions. The offerings will come from major studios including HBO, Sony Pictures, Viacom and Warner Brothers. Scrapbook and catalog browsing features have also been added.

One wild card working in Barnes & Noble's favor this holiday: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target, increasingly threatened by Amazon's online retail operations, won't carry the Kindle. The retailers will sell Barnes & Noble's Nooks, as well as other tablets like the iPad.

"This is going to be a lot of fun to watch over the next year," McQuivey said.

The new Nooks are available for pre-order online and in stores beginning on Wednesday and will begin shipping in late October and begin arriving in stores in early November.
