DOGS could be completely banned from some parks and recreation grounds across North Somerset as part of new control orders being proposed by the authority.

Council chiefs have launched a consultation on a series of new dog control orders which will see pets banned completely from some areas.

Areas where the council plans to introduce the ban include The Ponds at the Village Quarter, Portbury, Brampton Way play area, Portishead and Tickenham village field next to the village hall.

Dogs could also be banned from Banwell Recreation Ground at Westfield Road, Banwell Scout and adjacent land off West Street in Banwell and Winscombe Rugby Football Club at The Lynch, Winscombe.

The ban, if agreed, could also come into force at Christchurch churchyard, Redhill and Vee Lane in Felton.

The move to ban animals on the sites follows increasing complaints about people failing to clean up after their dogs.

The council is planning to introduce orders stating dogs must be kept on leads in a further 15 other areas across the district.

These include Portishead Marina, King George IV playing fields in Cleeve and along the promenade at Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon.

Pets will also have to be kept on a leash at sports and recreation grounds in Nailsea including Greenfield Crescent playing field, Engine Lane Rugby Football Ground, Grove Playing Field and Fryth Way playing field in Nailsea.

Nailsea Town Council clerk Ian Morrell said: "All these grounds are used by sports clubs and it is regularly the case they have to be cleared of dogs mess before games can start.

"Ideally if all dog owners were responsible and cleared up after their dogs, orders like this would not be necessary, but sadly this isn't the case."

Dog mess has long been a problem at Portishead Marina, with some people who walk their dogs failing to clear up after them. In the past councillors have asked for a covert camera to be installed along the waterside to catch pet owners in the act.

Local residents resorted to putting up posters in the marina development urging people to clean up after their pets. A consultation on the new orders is to start on Friday and last until the end of June.

People can leave their comments at the council website at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/dogcontrol orders2012.

Council spokesman, Nick Yates, said: "The consultation is likely to generate interest from the public, mainly from dog walkers."

People can be fined ?75 if they are caught failing to clean up after their pets.

BEIJING ? A stray dog has become China?s newest celebrity after latching onto a group of cyclists and traveling more than 1,100 miles over at least 12 mountains, some as high as 13,000 feet, in China?s southwestern Tibetan Plateau.

The homeless dog, nicknamed Xiao Sa, finished her 24-day journey from China?s Sichuan Province to Lhasa, Tibet on May 24.

?At first we didn?t think about adopting her at all,? said 22-year-old cyclist and college student Xiao Yong in an interview with China Central TV. ?But we were shocked by her perseverance. She followed us [from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province] to Litang [a town in Sichuan province with a 2.6 mile altitude]. We then decided to make a cage for her when we had a steep road going downhill.?

The long march began with a chicken leg Xiao Yong tossed to the puppy when he started his bike ride in early May. The little mutt followed the cyclist team after that and became part of the cycling group.

They came up with the nickname ?Xiao Sa? by combining the term ?xiao,? which means ?little,? with the last syllable of Lhasa, the administrative capital of Tibet and the cyclists final destination.

?She once ran 37 miles in one day, going uphill. We were very impressed by Xiao Sa?s persistence, that inspired us all the way till our destination, the Potala Palace [in Lhasa, Tibet],? said Xiao Yong. ?I?ll take Xiao Sa back home. I think she?s taking me as her owner now.?

Lu Bo, another team member, said the little white fur-ball was an inspiration to the whole team. The dog ?made us so happy. Once a few of our team members lagged behind, she ran from hill top to the bottom, to bring these guys to the rest of the team. She injected power into us,? said Lu.?

She is now with her new owner, Xiao Yong, in Wuhan, capital city of the southern Hubei province.

And like a true celebrity, Xiao Sa has even opened her own Weibo account, China?s most popular Twitter-like service. It is called ?GoGoXiaoSa,??where fans can check out her latest photos and whereabouts. And she already has over 82,000 followers.

By 2016, Internet traffic globally is expected to reach 150 petabytes an hour, or "the?equivalent of 278 million people streaming an HD movie ...?simultaneously," Cisco says.?

The highest-traffic generating countries in 2016 will be the United States, followed by China, says Cisco.

What's driving this growth? A good part?of it are all the phones, tablets and other "smart devices," including TV sets with Internet connections, that we're adopting.

By 2016, there will be nearly 18.9 billion network connections ? "almost 2.5 connections for each person on earth" ? compared with 10.3 billion network connections in 2011, Cisco says.

Last year, while?PCs "generated 94 percent of consumer Internet traffic," by 2016, that will decrease to 81 percent. Meanwhile, mobile?Internet data traffic is forecast to increase 18 times from 2011 to 2016.

There are other factors, too, Cisco says:

• By 2016, there will be 3.4 billion Internet users; that's about 45 percent of the world's projected population.
• More than half of the world's Internet traffic is expected to come from Wi-Fi connections by 2016.
• Meanwhile, the average fixed broadband speed will increase "nearly fourfold," from 9 megabits per second in 2011 to 34 megabits per second in 2016.
• More video, video, video. By 2016,?1.2 million video minutes?will?"travel the Internet every second."?In 2011, there were an estimated 792 million Internet video users, Cisco says; by 2016 there will be 1.5 billion. For businesses worldwide, "desktop videoconferencing is projected to be the fastest-growing service, with 36.4 million users in 2011, increasing to 218.9 million users in 2016."

"Each of us increasingly connects to the network via multiple devices in our always-on connected lifestyles," said Suraj Shetty, Cisco's vice president of product and solutions marketing, in a statement. "Whether by video phone calls, movies on tablets, web-enabled TVs, or desktop video conferencing, the sum of our actions not only creates demand for zettabytes of bandwidth, but also dramatically changes the network requirements needed to deliver on the expectations of this 'new normal.' "

Another day, another pop-up shop. But this is one that you won?t want to miss ? and it?s a Wee Birdy favourite, too. St Jude?s is a British-based company with two studios ? one in Norfolk, England and the other in Morayshire, Scotland. Founded by Simon & Angie Lewin, the company collaborates with a variety of artists to design and produce a range of fabrics, wallpapers and other homewares.

I?ve been a long-time admirer of this little gem of a company and when we moved into our new flat in Sydney, I bought a pair of Angie Lewin?s beautiful dandelion print cushions and had them shipped over to remind me of the British countryside.

Many of Angie?s prints feature motifs inspired by nature ? blossoms, seeds, berries, leaves, stems and stamens ? that are distinctly British in style, and are reminiscent of mid-century designs.

Alongside St Jude?s range of artist-designed cushions, fabrics and wallpapers, Emily Sutton?s ?High Street? series of original paintings will also be exhibited at the pop-up shop in central London, alongside new work by Mark Hearld and Angie Lewin.

Each work portrays a traditional Victorian shopfront with the most exquisite details. Pigeons peck at crumbs outside the bakery and community notices are plastered all over the door of the pet shop. The paintings are available to purchase for ?495 each.

And have a look at Emily?s series of birds, which I?ve never had an opportunity to showcase on Wee Birdy before.

These glorious hand-painted and hand-stitched birds were created for a past show, and have long since sold-out. I?m super-pleased to finally feature them here.

For those who might have been following the news, you guys are probably aware that one of the more prominent legal battles currently waged is between Oracle and Google, with the former accusing the latter of copyright infringement pertaining to Google?s Android mobile operating system. Well it looks like that legal battle could almost be over as the jury has come forward with a decision that ultimately stated that they did not find Google guilty of infringing upon Oracle?s patents.

Prior to this, the jury had found Google guilty of infringing upon Oracle?s copyrights, but they were ultimately unable to arrive at the conclusion as to whether the copyrighted material was covered under ?fair use?. While this is certainly a victory for Google, there are other issues still at large, such as Judge Alsup?s ruling (which he will be giving next week) as to whether the SSO of Java?s API can be copyrighted in the first place. Should the judge find that the SSO is not covered by copyright law, Oracle will receive statutory damages from Google for the rangeCheck and test file usage which will cost $150,000 per infringement count. Alternatively if the judge were to rule that the SSO is covered by copyright law, the copyright infringement counts will be bundled together and dealt with in a new trial.

Both Oracle and Google have issued statements with regards to the outcome of the jury?s verdict:

Oracle:

Oracle presented overwhelming evidence at trial that Google knew it would fragment and damage Java. We plan to continue to defend and uphold Java?s core write once run anywhere principle and ensure it is protected for the nine million Java developers and the community that depend on Java compatibility.

Google:

Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) (NASDAQ: LORL), the world?s leading provider of commercial satellites, announced that the Nimiq 6 satellite, designed and built for Telesat, one of the world?s leading satellite operators, is successfully performing post-launch maneuvers according to plan. The satellite was successfully launched yesterday from the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan aboard a Proton Breeze M launch vehicle provided by International Launch Services(ILS). The satellite deployed its solar arrays early this morning according to schedule, and tomorrow it will begin firing its main thruster to maneuver into geostationary orbit.
