Droid 4 gets hands-on treatment, but it's simply a dummy unit

The folks over at TechnoBuffalo have just come across a rather interesting specimen -- it's a dummy unit of the forthcoming Droid 4 from Motorola. While its rumored release date has come and gone, non-functional models such as this are commonly offered to consumers in a retail setting to poke and prod to their heart's content. Nonetheless, the hands-on offers a few interesting details, such as a soft touch backside and insight into the redesigned keyboard, which is described as "the best one yet on a Droid handset." Whether we agree with that assertion will be determined come review time, but if you're interested to see the collection of up-close and personal shots with Moto's latest slider, be sure to check the source below.

Windows Phone Marketplace hits the 50,000 apps mark

Hits it much earlier than expected.

Though the operating system Windows Phone 7 hasn?t quite found its footing in the marketplace, it now has one solid achievement to boast about ? it has hit the 50,000 app mark in its Marketplace days before it was expected to.

AllAboutWindowsPhone.com lets us know of this milestone and its a pretty big deal for the OS, since the entire life of an OS depends on how many users really make apps for it since that?s a very lucrative draw and the reason why iOS and especially Android have been gaining traction (and why Blackberry isn?t). The report suggests that the OS will reach 100,000 mark by summer 2012 at the rate that it?s going at.

Are you excited about the OS?

Debt Relief In America ? How To Use A Legal Settlement Process to Get Out Of Debt

Over the years thousands of us have had to deal with debt in some way or another. For some of us it can get to the point where the debts you currently have, outweigh the income you have coming in. This is called being insolvent.

For years people have been seeking solutions and debt relief options that would help them get themselves out from under the weight of their debt and back onto a track of financial freedom and responsibility.

For many years Bankruptcy was the fix all for debt. People would rack up large amounts of debt then file for a chapter 7 bankruptcy and have those debt wiped away, only to start the process up again. The banks lobbied and finally got stricter regulations in place to prevent this from happening. In 2005 the bankruptcy abuse act was passes making it very difficult for people to qualify for a chapter 7 bankruptcy but instead pushed people into a chapter 13 bankruptcy whereby people are forced into a repayment program, sometimes for 100% of the debt that they owe.

Next came the era of Consumer Credit Counseling as a debt relief program. These agencies popped up everywhere offering assistance to people looking to deal with mounting credit card debt. The process was simple because in many cases the credit card companies themselves either owned or had back room deals with the agencies who were ?supposedly? working for you. As a result the programs came under scrutiny and the FTC passed guidelines that prohibited the way they could operate. The typical person who is looking for debt relief, is looking to lower their monthly expenses but with CCC you typically pay the same as your paying right now which does not help the person who cannot afford their monthly payments as it is.

This not being an option for most people, individuals turned to debt consolidation loans whereby they attempted to lower their payments by bundling all of their debt into one loan with a low interest rate. In many cases people had too much debt or too low of a credit score to qualify for another unsecure loan, so the banks wanted a security. In many cases this took the form of a Home Equity loan, or a remortgage. Most of us today are still feeling the repercussions from this. People were bundling all of their unsecure debt into secure loans and then realizing not too long after that they no longer could afford those payments, or they got themselves mixed up with a balloon loan or a variable APR loan. Now these people run the risk of not falling behind on their credit card debt, but losing their homes.

People then began to turn to an age old practice of debt relief called debt settlement. This is a process that a person attempts to negotiate with the credit card companies and agrees on a lower payoff to settle out the debt. Since this process is both time consuming and required a lot of experience in the art of negotiations, often times requiring long standing relationships with the creditors, people turned to companies who specialize in this process. A company that does this for the consumer is known as a debt settlement company.

What happed next was that many people from the failing mortgage and real-estate industry, seeing the amount of people turning to debt settlement, decided to jump on the bandwagon in the hopes to make a quick buck. This created a boom in the amount of debt settlement companies out there. What is also did was cause a number of scam companies to pop up, offering what looked like legitimate debt settlement but in actuality were scamming the people out of their hard earned money. Many of these debt settlement companies were charging the majority of their fees up front before any settlements or in many cases before any services were provided at all.

Seeing the amount of people that had horror stories of dealing with a debt settlement company that took them for a ride, the FTC decided to pass debt settlement laws on how a debt settlement company can operate and charge its fees. First of all, if a company is charging its fees before a settlement had been reached, they do not have the client?s best interest in mind. It also shows that they do not have confidence in their own abilities.

No company should be charging you a penny until they reach a settlement. This ensures you that you know what you are paying for, and gives them the motivation to work hard on your behalf to save you the most they can. Any debt settlement company that is charging upfront fees are not only no doing you any justice, but may not be in compliance with the FTC guidelines.

If your looking for debt relief and are considering going with a debt settlement company, make sure you are choosing one where you don?t pay anything until you settle!

Snow and tears mark funeral for North Korean leader (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? The world watched anxiously on Wednesday as North Korea staged a huge funeral in the capital, Pyongyang, for former leader Kim Jong-il, searching for signs of what to expect from the isolated nation that may be close to attaining nuclear weapons capacity.

Bleak pictures from state television showed a funeral cortege led by a limousine carrying a huge picture of the 69-year old, who died on December 17, passing serried ranks of olive green-clad soldiers whose bare heads were bowed in homage in the main square of the snow-covered capital.

A hearse carrying the coffin was led by a weeping Kim Jong-un, the son and heir, accompanied by Jang Song-thaek, his uncle and a key power-broker in the transition, and Ri Yong-ho, the army chief of staff.

"Seeing this white snow fall has made me think of the general's efforts and this brings tears to my eyes," Seo Ju-rim, a red-cheeked, weeping female soldier, told North Korean television, referring to Kim.

One of the myths surrounding Kim Jong-il was that he could control the weather and state media has reported unusually cold and wild weather accompanying his death.

Video showed weeping civilians who swayed with grief and shouted "father, father" as black Lincoln and Mercedes limousines and army trucks streamed past the crowds. It was not clear whether the pictures were live or recorded.

"I wished it was a dream, how can this be true," sobbed one middle-aged woman named Kim. "How can anything like this ever happen in the world?"

Kim Jong-un will become the third member of the family to run the unpredictable North Asian country as it enters 2012, the year that was supposed to mark its self-proclaimed transformation into a "strong and prosperous" nation.

Larry Niksch, who has tracked North Korea for the nonpartisan U.S. Congressional Research Service for 43 years, believes it could take as little as one to two years to have a working nuclear missile once the North produced enough highly enriched uranium for the warhead's core fuel.

The prospect of an untested leader, believed to be in his late 20s, having nuclear capacity has alarmed many.

"Yes, we are watching and will be analyzing how any changes can be reflected in our policy," a South Korean government official said. He was not authorized to speak to the media, so could not be identified.

UNCLE JANG, POWER BEHIND THE THRONE

State television showed Jang Song-thaek walking directly behind Kim Jong-un alongside the limousine carrying the coffin. Jang ranks a lowly 19th in the list of names on the state funeral committee but his public elevation confirms that he will play a key role in shaping policies.

An ascetic-looking, bespectacled 65-year-old, Jang has overcome a purge, bitter palace intrigue and personal tragedy to become vice chairman of the National Defense Commission, the supreme leadership council which Kim Jong-il led as head of the military state.

"Kim Jong-un is clearly the head of the new leadership but, in terms of hierarchy and influence, Jang appears to have secured considerable position," said Yoo Ho-yeol, a North Korea expert at Korea University in the south.

Strong it may be -- North Korea is backed by neighboring China, has conducted two nuclear tests and has a 1.2 million-strong armed forces -- but prosperous it is not.

On average, the 25 million North Koreans have a life expectancy three-and-a-half years lower than they did when "Eternal President" Kim Il-sung, the new leader's grandfather, died in 1994, according to U.N. data.

The United Nations, in a country program for 2011-15, says North Korea's main challenge is to "restore the economy to the level attained before 1990" and to alleviate food shortages for a third of its 25 million population.

Indications from the transition since Kim Jong-il's death suggest his "military first" policy will continue, leading to further hardship in a country that endured mass starvation in the 1990s.

Leverage from outside, with the exception of China, is limited. All the United States, South Korea and Japan can do is hope that the regime does not collapse, nor flex its military muscle as it did in 2010, when it shelled a South Korean island.

North Korea was established in 1948 and under its founding father, Kim Il-sung, went to war to try to conquer the South. It failed and in 1953 a dividing line that would become the world's most militarized frontier was drawn across the peninsula.

PROSPECTS OF A PURGE

While Kim Il-sung was revered by his people for fighting Japanese colonial rule, the halo surrounding his successors has steadily dimmed to such an extent that his grandson, the new ruler, will have to rely on people such as his uncle, Jang, to hold on to power, at least in the short term.

Official media in the North have built Kim Jong-un, a jowly and rotund man in his late 20s, into a leader worthy of inheriting the crown, naming him "respected general," "great successor," "outstanding leader" and "supreme commander."

This year, dissident groups based in South Korea, citing North Korean refugees and businessmen working in China, linked the youngest Kim to a crackdown on business activities and a tougher policy on people seeking to flee from North Korea.

Those reports could not be verified independently, but would again suggest that further repression is more likely than an economic opening under the new man.

It also gives little hope for the 200,000 North Koreans who human rights group Amnesty international says are enslaved in labor camps, subjected to torture and hunger or execution.

"There is likely to be a politically motivated purge and imprisonment, and it could go on for a considerable period of time," said Pak Sang-hak, who heads a group in Seoul working to support defectors, and is himself a defector.

"That is especially because of the relative instability of Kim Jong-un's leadership. There might also be persecution as a way of intimidation and discipline."

Nuclear Iran: A Dire Threat to Israel?

The chief of Israel?s army has warned that a nuclear-powered Iran poses a grave threat not only to the Jewish state, but to the entire Middle East.

However, Binyamin "Benny" Gantz, the Chief of General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), also said that the danger can be met head on through appropriate preparations.

According to Israeli media, Gantz told high school students in Be?er Tuvia in the southern part of the country: "Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons and this topic should concern us. With proper international and Israeli preparations, this challenge can be met, and [allow us] to stay here as to fulfill the Zionist dream for dozens and hundreds of years to come.?

In addition, the army boss warned: "Israel is the only country in the world which is under a threat of annihilation by a country working to that end, but the threat is not only on Israel but the entire region and other parts of the world."

He also added that revolutions across the Arab world could prompt the strengthening of radical Islamic movements in the region ? yet another danger for Israel.

"I would be happy if this phenomenon [revolt] leads to democratic neighboring countries, but in case of negative developments there is room for concern," Gantz said.

Meanwhile, worries about Iran and its potential for developing nuclear weapons moved into a new phase after the country?s naval officials warned that they would block the Strait of Hormuz (the key crude oil trans-shipment waterway between Iran and the Arab oil emirates) if the US and Europe persist with their sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Tehran also said they will begin testing long-range missiles in the Persian Gulf.

?There has long festered speculation that Israel may seek to launch an attack on Iran to scuttle its atomic weapons program, much like they have done in the past with Syria and Iraq.

A few days ago Iran?s Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi warned that if Israel dared attempted such an attack; it would be tantamount to suicide.

However, Israel?s defense spy chief recently downplayed the threat that Iran poses.

According to the Washington Times, Tamir Pardo, the chief of Israel?s intelligence agency Mossad, does not think a nuclear-armed would immediately mean the extinction of Israel.

?If you said a nuclear bomb in Iranian hands was an ?existential? threat [to Israel], that would mean that we would have to close up shop,? he reportedly told a group of ambassadors. ?That?s not the situation. The term is used too freely.?

Still, many believe that an Israeli attack on Iran is likely before too long.

Daniel Korski of the European Council on Foreign Relations wrote in a column for the British publication Spectator that an Israeli move against Iran is not outside the realm of possibility, despite all the logistical and geopolitical ramifications of such a strike.

?There are reasons why 2012 could, indeed, be the year when Israel will find it propitious to take overt military action against Iran's nuclear program,? he wrote.

?Everyone assumes that a range of covert activities, from assassinations to cyber attacks, are already ongoing. The Iranian government is moving closer to having the requisite capabilities, and can reasonably be expected to take the final steps towards nuclearization. What better way for Tehran to distract attention from their burgeoning problems ? including sanctions, economic hardship, the risk of renewed protest, and possible conflict inside the regime ? than to declare that it has become a nuclear power on a par with the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain, India, Pakistan and, crucially, Israel??

Korski also said the U.S. will play a crucial role in any such attack on Iran by Israel.

?The period during the U.S. presidential election may be the best for Israel to strike,? he wrote. ?President Obama will be under pressure from the Republicans to back Israeli action ? Iran being seen as the President's biggest foreign policy weakness ? and so he will be constrained in how much he can hold the Israeli government back.?

It is unclear if Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu favors a strike on Iran or not, despite his harsh rhetoric against Tehran. Reportedly, the top brass of Israel's military are divided over the issue.

Ungrateful Xmas kids use Twitter to bash parents

by Steven Mostyn - Dec 29 2011, 11:34

Image: Joe Shlabotnik/Flickr.

For kids enduring Christmases of old, the crushing disappointment associated with opening unwanted presents was later shared with close friends beyond the earshot of adults.

However, moaning about the despicable mistakes made by unloving parents and other out-of-touch relatives has now become a trending topic on Twitter.

Specifically, ungrateful tykes everywhere have been using the micro-blogging platform to bring their whining discontent to the world?for which they deserve the shaming they?ve subsequently received from comedy writer Jon Hendren (@fart).

?I?m still depressed over the fact that my mom ordered the while iPhone 4S instead of the black one for me,? tweeted the astonishingly ungrateful azwan azni on December 25.

We sincerely hope the mother in question saw this post, promptly returned said iPhone, and bought herself something pretty with the cash.?

?welp my christmas is pretty much ruined,? offered poor unfortunate nicole rose, ?im not getting my car till after tomorrow. so much for a car with a big red bow in the driveway.?

?If i wake up tomorrow, open every present & there is NO iphone, I?m knocking over our Christmas tree and moving out,? declared jenny majamaki on Christmas Eve.

Hendren apparently spent much of his Christmas Eve and Christmas Day idly seeking out and retweeting bitter messages from miserable kids after taking advantage of the Twitter search function.

Time well spent, we say. Especially if it highlights exactly how spoilt and shallow people have become in this ugly consumerism-driven society of ours. Shameful.

Here are a few more, just to hammer the point home:

?No Iphone,? offered a distraught Paul Reyes. ?I hate my dad.?

?I wanted a car, I got a computer,? wept Chris Bauer, ?how?s that for being born under a bad sign.?

?returning my kindle fire and getting an iphone? this is bullshit,? exclaimed Sydnie Cook.

Check out more examples by visiting Jon Hendren?s official Twitter account.

Fearing split, pastors urge GOP candidates to quit

(AP) ? Two politically active pastors in Iowa's robust evangelical conservative movement said Wednesday that an effort has been under way to persuade either Rick Santorum or Michele Bachmann to consider quitting the Republican presidential race and endorsing the other to avoid splintering this influential voting bloc's influence in the state's caucuses.

"Otherwise, like-minded people will be divided and water down their impact," said Rev. Cary Gordon, a Sioux City minister. He said he asked Santorum several weeks ago to consider exiting the race but has since endorsed the former Pennsylvania senator, who is rising in polls.

Rev. Albert Calloway, a retired pastor from Indianola, said he asked Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, several days ago to consider quitting the race.

A group of voters that united behind former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's winning caucus campaign in 2008 fear that this year's caucuses could be won by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas. Neither track as closely to the religious right as Santorum, Bachmann or Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Santorum, long dismissed and short on campaign money, has diligently campaigned in Iowa for more than two years. A CNN poll of Iowa caucus-goers released Wednesday showed Santorum leaping into third place in Iowa, at 16 percentage points, behind Romney and Paul.

In recent weeks, Santorum has picked up the endorsements of key social conservatives, including former gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats, who led the successful effort last year to oust three Iowa Supreme Court judges who were part of the court's unanimous 2009 decision to allow gay marriage.

Bachmann too has rallied Iowa's influential conservative clergy. Many, like Jeff Mullen, pastor of one of the Des Moines area's mega churches, helped lead Bachmann's winning campaign for Iowa's Republican presidential straw poll last August. But since then, Bachmann has faded in polls, although Wednesday she planned to conclude an ambitious effort to campaign in all of Iowa's 99 counties.

The CNN poll showed Bachmann with support of 9 percent of likely GOP caucus-goers, up slightly from the last poll. Perry had 11 percent, also up slightly.

Bachmann told reporters on her campaign bus between stops in Iowa on Wednesday she wasn't quitting and planned to announce additional clergy who were supporting her candidacy.

"The pastors who have endorsed my campaign want to see me as the next president of the United States," Bachmann said.

Gordon, who helped lead the campaign against the judges, said the fear of a divided social conservative vote is widespread among the state's evangelical clergy. However, few have actually reached out to candidates, he said.

Brad Cranston, a pastor from Burlington, said he too is worried that social conservatives will split their vote and lose influence over the eventual GOP nominee, but he has not yet tried to contact any candidates.

"It's more and more obvious it needs to happen for either Bachmann or Santorum to move forward," said Cranston, who has endorsed Bachmann.

NFL Power Rankings, Week 17: CBS Sports Keeps 49ers At No. 4

The conclusion of another week of NFL football means it is time for more power rankings. CBS Sports released their Week 17 NFL Power Rankings and as with most sites, the top of rankings remained static. Their top five remains the same and only one new team, the New York Giants, joined the top ten.

The San Francisco 49ers remain locked in at the number four position with the Packers, Saints and Patriots ahead of them for now. CBS Sports provides a brief comment about each team with their ranking, and said of the 49ers:

They run it and play good defense. That's a good style for the regular season. Come playoff time, they have to throw it better.

The 49ers are 12-3 and have a chance to lock up the number two seed in the NFC with a win over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Getting a chance to host the New Orleans Saints at home in the second round would be infinitely more favorable to hosting a first round game and then traveling to the Superdome in round two. The Saints are downright dominant at home, but if you get them out in the elements, they are a much more beatable team.

The 49ers do need to improve their red zone efficiency, which would entail some manner of improvement in the passing game. However, if they can bring their same strong defensive effort, the amount of necessary improvement might not be what some people think.

Here are the top ten according to the CBS Sports Week 17 NFL Power Rankings:

1. Green Bay Packers
2. New Orleans Saints
3. New England Patriots
4. San Francisco 49ers
5. Baltimore Ravens
6. Pittsburgh Steelers
7. Atlanta Falcons
8. Detroit Lions
9. Houston Texans
10. New York Giants

Best Buy rewards your procrastination with buy-one-get-one iPhone 4 deal

Sure it's Christmas Eve and we're more than halfway through Hanukkah, but it's never too late to score some last minute deals -- and heck, why not get a little something for yourself, while you're at it? Best Buy wants to give you a free iPhone 4 for your impressive ability to hold out on holiday shopping for this long. Pick up a 32GB version of the last-gen handset with a two-year AT&T or Verizon plan, and the big box retailer will toss in a second (plus carrier fees, naturally). This is an in-store only sort of deal, and it's only good through close at 5PM tonight -- those folks in the blue polo shirts have families too, you know.
