Al Qaeda number two killed in Pakistan this week (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Al Qaeda's new second-in-command was killed earlier this week in Pakistan, U.S. officials said on Saturday, in a major blow to the group still reeling from the death of Osama bin Laden.

Atiyah abd al-Rahman, a Libyan national, rose to the number two spot when Ayman al-Zawahri took the reins of al Qaeda after bin Laden was killed in May in a U.S. raid in Pakistan.

One U.S. official said Rahman was killed in a strike by an unmanned drone on Aug. 22. He was killed in Waziristan in northwest Pakistan where intelligence officials believe members of al Qaeda are hiding, other U.S. officials said.

"Atiyah's death is a tremendous loss for al Qaeda, because (Zawahri) was relying heavily on him to help guide and run the organization, especially since bin Laden's death," one U.S. official said.

"The trove of materials from bin Laden's compound showed clearly that Atiyah was deeply involved in directing al Qaeda's operations even before the (May) raid. He had multiple responsibilities in the organization and will be very difficult to replace," the official said.

U.S. and Pakistani intelligence ties have been strained since the unilateral American strike against bin Laden, and Pakistani intelligence did not confirm Rahman's death. Sources in Pakistan said four people known to have been killed in a U.S. drone strike on Aug. 22 were local militants and not al Qaeda.

Although most U.S. officials described Rahman as al Qaeda's No. 2, one said his rank wasn't as clear, saying he could be considered one of the top three leaders of the organization.

Regardless, Rahman's death, if confirmed, would signal another significant setback for al Qaeda's core group just days before the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

In the past decade, al Qaeda's affiliates have become a greater concern, with its Yemen-based off-shoot now seen in Washington as the bigger threat to the United States.

HARDER FOR ZAWAHRI?

Noman Benotman, a former Libyan Islamist and now an analyst with Britain's Quilliam think tank, described Rahman as al Qaeda's "CEO", or chief executive officer.

"This was the one man al Qaeda could not afford to lose," Benotman said.

"In the last two years he successfully, and I think more or less single-handedly, created the dynamics that kept al Qaeda together."

Rahman was originally from the Libya, and his real name was Jamal Ibrahim Ishtawi, Benotman said. A graduate of the engineering department of Misrata University, he left Libya to go to Afghanistan in 1988 and join the Islamist groups then fighting Soviet occupation, he added.

A U.S. official said Rahman ran daily operations for the group, spoke on behalf of bin Laden and Zawahri and was the one that "affiliates knew and trusted."

"Zawahri needed Atiyah's experience and connections to help manage al Qaeda. Now it will be even harder for him to consolidate control," the U.S. official said.

Zawahri is believed to lack bin Laden's presence or his ability to unite different Arab factions within the group, analysts say.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month on a visit to Afghanistan that he believed the strategic defeat of al Qaeda was within reach if the United States could kill or capture up to 20 remaining leaders of the core group and its affiliates.

"News of his demise underscores what Leon Panetta has been saying for some time about al Qaeda: it's important to sustain intense pressure on this group of terrorists and thugs," a third senior U.S. official said.

"Dialing back on al Qaeda leadership in Pakistan, especially while they try to regroup after bin Laden's death, isn't the way to go. For the sake of our national security, they need to be knocked out for good."

AP Exclusive: 5 years later, Jena 6 move on (AP)

JENA, La. ? This small Louisiana town doesn't look much different than it did five years ago: The same small businesses open their doors six days a week, except for Sundays, when most people head to Jena's many churches. The upcoming high school football season is the main topic of conversation.

Things have mostly gotten back to normal in this community of about 3,000 people, which became the site of a massive civil rights protest that attracted thousands in September 2007, nine months after six black students who became known as the "Jena Six" were charged with attempted murder after a white classmate was severely beaten.

It was on Aug. 30, 2006, that a black student asked if he could sit under a tree on campus or if it was for white students only. The next morning there were three nooses hanging in the tree. The tension culminated on Dec. 4, when Justin Barker was beaten. Six of his black classmates were arrested. Three days later, five of them were charged with attempted murder.

The town has moved on from the perception of racial tension that once defined it. So, too, have the Jena Six.

Reed Walters, the LaSalle Parish District Attorney since 1991, said he believes the incident drew the town closer together, including the march. Thousands of chanting demonstrators filled the streets that September day, led by figures such as the Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. At the time, the town was left to fend off accusations of racism in the justice system ? no one was charged for hanging the nooses, and protesters derided the attempted murder charges as excessive. The charges were later reduced.

"The world had been told that Jena was such an evil place," Walters said. "I think during that march people saw that was not true."

Members of the Jena Six are determined to move away ? and learn ? from their controversial pasts. They say they want to be something one day: A sports agent, a lawyer, a military man. Those interviewed said they don't run into problems when they return to Jena to visit family.

"I've tried to wash those memories out of the back of my head," said Jessie Ray Beard, who was 14 when he was arrested in the beating. "I have other things to concentrate on."

Beard's attorney's arranged for him to stay with another attorney's family in New York about three and a half years ago and attend the Canterbury School, a private boarding school in Connecticut.

"That first year was very, very hard for him," said Alan Howard, the attorney with whom Beard lives.

"It took a tremendous effort on his part to make it."

Beard has since gone on to Hofstra, where he earned an academic scholarship, is pursuing legal studies and business, and plays on the lacrosse team. He plans to go to grad school on the west coast and eventually work as a sports agent.

Robert Bailey Jr., who graduated from high school in Georgia, plays wide receiver at Grambling and is a member of the ROTC. After he graduates in 2013, he hopes to pursue a military career.

"Because of what happened, I grew up. I learned things too, like doing things the right way," Bailey said.

Mychal Bell, who was 16 at the time, was the only defendant to go to trial. He was convicted, but that decision was set aside. He ultimately pleaded guilty to a second-degree battery charge and received an 18-month sentence. The other five accepted a plea deal that gave them seven days probation, a $500 fine and court costs.

Bell, a highly recruited football player before the beating, is a cornerback on Southern University's team. His attorney said it was best if he wasn't interviewed.

"Every time there's something in the press about him, he gets a lot of hate mail," said Bell's attorney, Louis Scott.

Theo Shaw, 21, is now studying political science and history at Louisiana University-Monroe and plans to go to law school. He has done several internships in the field, he said, including one with the Innocence Project, a national nonprofit that works to free wrongfully convicted prisoners. His time in jail sparked his interest in law ? he said he spent a lot of time reading up on the subject so he could file court papers.

"I do think it was a situation that helped me to develop character and be a better person," Shaw said. "But beyond that, I don't think of it much anymore."

Bryant Purvis is enrolled in Southeastern Louisiana. Carwin Jones did not return calls left with his father for comment.

The victim, Justin Barker, is the only one who still lives in Jena. Now 22, he's an inconspicuous young man: thin, with soft brown hair and large eyes, a Southerner raised to say "Yes, ma'am" and "Yes, sir" and stay quiet around strangers. So he's always surprised when someone asks if he's "that" Justin Barker, he told The Associated Press in his first media interview since the beating five years ago.

"That's the only time that whole thing comes up," Barker said, sitting in the dining area of his tidy new trailer. These days he works on an oil rig in Texas ? seven days on, seven off ? and helps his father cut timber when he's home. He recently divorced the woman who was his girlfriend when he was beaten.

The defendants initially claimed Barker had made a racial slur, prompting the attack. But they admitted that was untrue as part of the plea deal. As for Barker, all he remembers is this: He walked out of the gym and turned left to avoid a crowd when something hit him.

"I don't know why they attacked me," he said. "No one ever told me, and I don't have a clue until this day."

He woke up in the emergency room, his right eye swollen shut and his jaw fractured. Both took months to heal, and he still deals with TMJ ? a popping in the joint where the jaw connects to the skull. He sued the defendants and was awarded $22,000 for medical bills and $7,000 in damages. Now he says he's put it all behind him.

"I'm just trying to get on with my life," Barker said. "I have put all that behind me."

Barker is one of the few young people that stay in town, as most leave to find jobs, said Mayor Murphy McMillin. These days, town officials are focused on ensuring there is a high quality of life in Jena. For the mayor, the term "Jena Six" has taken on new meaning.

"There is a new Jena Six ? the mayor and the five city councilmen," McMillin said.

The town's seven black churches make a point of getting together and interacting with folks who attend white churches, "and we have it on a regular basis," said the Rev. Jimmy Young, 70, pastor of L&A Baptist Church. Young is black.

Walters, the district attorney, won't talk about the case. But he does have one regret.

"I wish I had been able to explain things better," he said. "I don't think I did a very good job of that."

Popgadget Personal Technology for Women: Beauty Gadget : LightStim

woman_01.jpg

Used to be, you had to go to your doctor's office for a zap of LED light therapy. Said to diminish fine lines and wrinkles and result in more radiant skin, women flocked to the treatment. The only problem: the price. (Professional LED treatments usually cost $100 or more per treatment.) Originally used for acne treatment, doctors accidentally discovered that LED Light Therapy stimulated your cells, thereby increasing the production of collagen and elastin.

So with FDA approval, various companies came out with their own LED light systems for home use. Of the ones we've tried, LightStim is the best product on the market. It's not cheap at $350 but figure what you save on the doctor visits. It is the only LED gizmo approved by the FDA specifically for wrinkles, and many doctor's office even use them. Some of the similar products do not have enough LED "wattage" to really make any difference.

Use it religiously for 20 minutes every day and you will gradually see a difference in your skin.
It took us about a month, and a great side effect was that it cleared up any pimples or discolorations.

(Before it was used as an anti-aging device, the blue light LED therapy was the the go-to therapy for bad acne.)

LightStim is labeled safe for all skin types, but as with any skin treatment, we recommend you check with your dermatologist before starting.

New study is the first North American clinical trial to test adult mesenchymal stem cell transplantation as a new therapy for MS

A team of researchers at three landmark Cleveland institutions have come together to launch a new clinical trial of an experimental treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS). Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, and Case Western Reserve University are collaborating on a ground-breaking study that will test the feasibility and safety of using the body's own stem cells to treat MS.

In patients with MS, the immune system abnormally attacks the central nervous system, causing damage to the nerve cells and their protective myelin sheath. The body has mechanisms that attempt to repair this damage; however, in MS, the repair cannot keep pace with the ongoing damage.

The Phase 1 trial involves harvesting a patient's mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are primitive cells in the bone marrow, culturing them in a laboratory, and then injecting the MSCs intravenously back into the patient to see if the procedure is safe, decreases disease activity, and leads to improved repair.

The research team is headed up by Jeffrey Cohen, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic's Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research, and is funded by a $2.75 million, four-year grant from the United States Department of Defense and a $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Cohen is Director of the Mellen Center's Experimental Therapeutics Program and Professor of Medicine (Neurology) in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He has taken a lead role in a large number of MS clinical trials, including a Phase 3 trial that led to the recent approval of the first oral therapy for MS.

"Currently, there are eight medications approved to treat MS. They slow the disease but none of them reverses it. The hope is that mesenchymal stem cells will lessen ongoing damage caused by MS and promote repair," said Dr. Cohen. "We're taking a cautious approach, carefully monitoring for any unexpected side effects, as we look to see if MSC have the abilities that we anticipate."

MSCs have a wide range of effects that decrease the activity of immune cells while encouraging tissue repair, both of which may be beneficial in MS. In addition, in numerous laboratory studies, MSCs were able to migrate from the blood into areas of inflammation or injury in the nervous system and reduce damage probably by creating a tissue environment that encourages the body's intrinsic repair processes.

Study participants will be monitored very closely for six months after they receive the MSC transplantation, including physical exams, blood work, and other testing to determine whether the procedure is safe and well-tolerated. The research team will also monitor their disease status through quantitative neurologic exam, vision testing, advanced MRI, and optical coherence tomography of the retina prior to and for six months after MSC administration to evaluate whether the procedure impacts the activity or severity of each participant's MS. Finally, in collaboration with investigators at the Montreal Neurological Institute, the immunologic effects of MSCs will be comprehensively assessed, both in culture and in the patients.

Cleveland is one of only a handful of locations in the country where a research endeavor like this could be conducted because it is home to a "dream team" of clinical and research experts with strong collegial relationships; located less than two miles from each other:

They include:

  • Cleveland Clinic's Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research, part of the Neurological Institute;
  • University Hospitals (UH) Seidman Cancer Center Coleman Clinical Research Suite;
  • Cellular Therapy Laboratory (CTL) based in the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine National Center for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM), a multi-institutional program comprised of investigators from Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University, UH Case Medical Center, Athersys, Inc., and the Ohio State University.

The research process will involve:

  • Baseline testing, including general and neurologic exams, vision testing, MRI, and optical coherence tomography, conducted at Cleveland Clinic's Mellen Center.
  • Participants have their bone marrow aspirated from their hip in the Coleman Clinical Research Suite at UH Case Medical Center.
  • The stem cells will be culture-expanded in the CTL in the NCRM then frozen.
  • Participants then have their stem cells infused in the Mellen Center.
  • Follow-up monitoring and testing will be done at the Mellen Center.

Dr. Cohen's study utilizes the CTL based in the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine NCRM, which is the only academic cleanroom facility for cellular therapy procedures in Northeast Ohio. The role of the CTL is to culture expand or "manufacture" the human MSCs for reinfusion into study subjects.

This study requires a specialized Class 10,000 cleanroom environment and uniquely qualified personnel because the study subject's marrow cells need to be grown ex vivo (outside of the body) for approximately a month to achieve an adequate number of MSCs. Once the desired dose is obtained, the cells are tested extensively to confirm they are viable and not contaminated to ensure safety, then cryopreserved. At a later date, they are transported to Mellen Center, carefully thawed, and infused intravenously. This type of cell manipulation is performed under the authority of the US Food and Drug Administration and must follow strict procedures, documentation, environmental and equipment monitoring, and quality assurance that is not feasible in a typical research lab.

The bone marrow harvesting is performed by physicians in the Coleman Clinical Research Suite in the UH Seidman Cancer Center (formerly known as the UH Ireland Cancer Center). UH Seidman Cancer Center is widely regarded as a pioneer in the field of hematopoietic (non-embryonic) stem cell transplantation, particularly in the development of MSCs to treat blood cancers. The first in-human trial of MSCs was published in 1995 by researchers from Case Western Reserve University and UH Seidman Cancer Center. Subsequently, UH Seidman Cancer Center conducted the first-in-humans trial of MSCs in autologous hematopoietic cell (blood/marrow) transplant (2000) and the first-in-humans trial of MSCs in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (2005).

Arnold Caplan, professor of biology at Case Western Reserve University who was involved in the first in-human trials of MSCs, and Robert Miller, a professor of neurology and associate dean for research at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, laid the groundwork for the current clinical trial. They discovered that in mice that have a form of MS, human MSCs promote healing of damage and protect against an autoimmune response. Drs. Caplan and Miller are members of the clinical trial's advisory committee.

Dr. Stanton Gerson, M.D., director of the UH Seidman Cancer Center and director of the National Center for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM), said, "This trial in MS is one of the most innovative trials of MSCs as it truly investigates both the clinical aspects as well as the science of what these cells do and how they may confer therapeutic benefit to recipients."

Dr. Gerson also added, "This trial is real joint venture. We have the experience of collecting, expanding, and infusing MSCs. Cleveland Clinic has extensive expertise in MS clinical trials using ultra-sophisticated imaging and other techniques. All three centers (Case Western Reserve, UH Case Medical Center, and Cleveland Clinic) have great basic neurologic science to understand what is happening with the cells and the patients."

The Phase 1 study, which will take two to three years to complete, will involve 24 patients with relapsing-remitting or progressive MS who have moderate to severe disability. If this trial demonstrates that MSC transplantation is safe, future studies will more definitively assess the efficacy of this therapy in MS. The study has already enrolled 4 patients, and the team expects to begin to report their initial findings over the next 1-2 years. More information on the study is available at www.clinicaltrials.gov.

N. Korea agrees to talk to US about GI remains

North Korea said Friday it had agreed to talks with the United States on repatriating remains of American service members killed in the 1950-53 Korean War amid a diplomatic push to ease tensions on the peninsula.

The agreement follows a series of top-level meetings between Pyongyang, Seoul, Washington and Beijing that has raised hopes of a resumption of long-stalled talks on disabling the North's nuclear weapons program.

The U.S. military said last week that it had reached out to Pyongyang to restart joint recovery efforts of U.S. service members, which were halted in May 2005 over concerns about the uncertain environment created by the North's nuclear program.

A spokesman for the North's Foreign Ministry said Friday the North had accepted the U.S. proposal on humanitarian grounds.

"Work for talks between the militaries of the DPRK [North Korea] and the U.S. is now under way," state media quoted him as saying.

Nearly 8,000 U.S. service members are listed as missing in the war, with the remains of more than half estimated to be buried in North Korea.

The North's announcement came just after hours Washington said it had offered North Korea up to $900,000 in emergency flood assistance.

Joint resort dispute
Inter-Korean relations remain fraught, with the two sides' militaries on edge at a disputed border off the west coast.

Last week, they exchanged artillery fire at the maritime boundary, and this week the North reacted angrily to a joint U.S.-South Korean military drill in the area.

On the east coast, there is no end in sight to a three-year long dispute over operations at a joint tourist resort.

On Friday, four officials from the South Korea company Hyundai Asan traveled to the Mt. Kumgang resort in a bid to end the dispute, which started with the shooting of a South Korean tourist by a North Korean soldier in 2008.

Pyongyang has threatened to dispose of South Korean companies' assets at the resort, angry that Seoul has refused to reopen the complex, which had been lucrative source of hard currency for the isolated state.

The Unification Ministry, which deals with inter-Korean affairs, said there was no word on any breakthrough at the talks.

Less tense
However, tensions are lower compared with last year, when 50 South Koreans were killed in two separate attacks that Seoul blamed on the North, although Pyongyang denies responsibility for one and says it was provoked into the other.

The two Koreas are still technically at war, having signed only on a truce, not a peace treaty, to end the Korean War.

Last month, top diplomats from the two Koreas and the United States held what they called "constructive" bilateral talks, their first such interaction in about two years.

Following the talks, Pyongyang said it was willing to resume regional nuclear disarmament talks at an early date, without preconditions.

The so-called six-party talks, which also involve China, Japan and Russia, collapsed more than two years ago after the North tested a nuclear device and a long-range missile.

Nev. desert searched in hunt for missing mom

New information has prompted authorities to launch a search Friday of the remote mountain desert around Ely, Nev., for a Utah woman who disappeared when her husband went camping with their boys, police said.

    7. 'Allo, guvnah! Mimicking accents may be innate talent

Authorities have declined to detail the scope of the search or say specifically what they are looking for in the desert some 237 miles southwest of Susan Cox Powell's home in West Valley City, Utah, where she was last seen Dec. 6, 2009.

The search is based on new, credible information obtained by investigators, West Valley City police Sgt. Mike Powell has said.

Police continue the investigation a missing persons case.

Susan Cox Powell was 28 and had two young children when she was reported missing Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job. She had been seen by friends at church and at dinner the day before.

Her husband, Joshua Powell, told police he left his wife at home about 12:30 a.m. that day to go winter camping in freezing temperatures with their young sons ? then ages 4 and 2 ? on the Pony Express Trail, about 80 miles west of Salt Lake City. The 4-year-old confirmed the trip to police.

'Lonely'
Police have called Joshua Powell a person of interest in the missing person case, although he's never been arrested or charged. Investigators have claimed Joshua Powell has not cooperated with their investigation, although his Salt Lake City attorney, Scott Williams, disputes that characterization.

On Thursday, Joshua Powell, who now lives in Puyallup, Wash., told Seattle's KING-TV he was "overjoyed" by news of the Nevada search. Joshua Powell has rarely spoken publicly about the case. He and his father have said they believe Susan might have run off with another man.

Video: Missing Utah mom ran off with man, father-in-law says (on this page)

"It's been a hard two years, it's been lonely," Joshua Powell said. "I will always love her. I am very, frankly overjoyed to think that they have found something they feel is credible.

"There's a lot of people who have been extremely supportive of me of our sons, it doesn't make up for what other people are trying to put us through."

Restraining order
Susan Cox Powell's disappearance has strained the relationship between her husband and her family, which for nearly two years has publicly pleaded with Joshua Powell to cooperate with police.

Court papers from Washington's Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma show Joshua Powell filed a restraining order against Susan's father, Chuck Cox. A court hearing is set for Aug. 23 in Tacoma, Wash.

In his petition, Joshua Powell claims Chuck Cox has used the news media to "inflict me and my children with emotional insecurity and fear." The restraining order followed an incident at a hardware store, where Powell and the children encountered Cox, who also lives in Puyallup. The papers state Cox and his wife begged Joshua Powell to let them hug their grandchildren and peppered Joshua Powell with questions about what he had been telling the children about Cox.

The petition also states that Joshua Powell believes Cox's behavior is increasingly threatening because he believes Joshua Powell is responsible for his daughter's disappearance.

On Thursday, Cox claimed he didn't understand why Joshua Powell wants to restrict Susan's family from seeing her children.

Cox said he would not be in Ely to monitor Friday's police search but was pleased by their continued efforts.

"I look at this, frankly, as further evidence that they are still on the case and willing to do whatever it takes to solve the case," he said. "Obviously, if they found her alive somewhere we certainly would be there instantly. ... We hope that she's alive, that she is returned, but we're preparing ourselves for the worst."
