Coast Guard chopper crashes; 1 dead, 3 missing

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 5:05 a.m. ET: MOBILE, Alabama -- One crew-member died and three were missing after a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crashed off Alabama's coast on Tuesday.

The Coast Guard said in a statement early Wednesday that one crew-member was found unresponsive and was later declared dead.

Petty Officer Second Class Elizabeth Bordelon said the MH-65 Dolphin crashed just after 8:30 p.m. local time (9:30 p.m. ET) in Mobile Bay near Point Clear, Alabama.

The flight originated from the Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Bordelon said.

A response cutter from Dauphin Island and two additional MH-65s from New Orleans were dispatched to assist in the search, she said.

A Mobile County Sheriff's Flotilla crew, an HU-144 twin-engine aircraft and an Alabama Marine Resources vessel were also?activated.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the crew-members during this difficult time," the Coast Guard said in a statement, adding that it was working through the night to find the three missing crew-members.

"This is our family we're talking about," Bordelon?told the Mobile Press-Register.

The Press-Register reported that winds were southeast at around 15 miles per hour and the water temperature 63 degrees Fahrenheit?on Tuesday night. Average water depth in the area averages at 13 feet,?the newspaper?said.

According to an overview on the U.S. Coast Guard website, the MH-65 Dolphin is its "most ubiquitous aircraft."

It is "certified for operation in all-weather and night-time operations, with the exception of icing conditions," the overview says.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

ROOFING CONTRACTOR SENTENCED FOR INSURANCE FRAUD ...

*Fraud discovered after worker fell from roof and was denied workers? compensation insurance

SANTA ANA - A roofing contractor was sentenced Friday to one year in jail and was ordered to pay $510,000 in restitution for failing to provide workers? compensation insurance for an injured employee and failing to pay insurance premiums for unclaimed employees, who were paid in cash. Michael Amzie Holley, 43, Murrieta, pleaded guilty to a court offer Feb. 26, 2010, to two felony counts of perjury by declaration, two felony counts of recording false and forged instruments, one felony count of misrepresenting facts to the State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF), seven felony counts of making a fraudulent statement, one felony count of presenting a fraudulent material statement to obtain compensation, one felony count of making a false statement to discourage an injured worker from claiming benefits, one felony count of willfully failing to pay taxes, one felony count of failing to file a return with the intent to evade taxes, and a sentencing enhancement for aggravated white collar crime over $500,000.

At the time of the crime, Holley was a roofing contractor and owner of So Cal Roofing. The defendant purchased a minimum workers? compensation policy from SCIF and failed to state that he employed subcontractors, paid workers in cash, hired unlicensed employees, and leased employees from other companies. Holley paid his employees in cash to hide the fact that So Cal Roofing had workers. He received insurance based on his false declaration and entered into a contract requiring SCIF to cover all workers employed by Holley, even those employees unknown to the insurance company. Holley submitted inaccurate payroll reports to SCIF, resulting in underpayment of insurance premiums. To hide the fraud, Holley failed to file an accurate tax return to avoid paying taxes to the State on the cash payments made to his employees.

On March 18, 2003, one of Holley?s employees was injured when he fell off a roof, and subsequently filed a worker?s compensation insurance claim. Holley denied that the injured employee worked for him, thus denying the injured employee his workers? compensation insurance benefits. On Feb. 24, 2004, and March 2, 2005, Holley fraudulently signed under penalty of perjury that he had no employees at So Cal Roofing and filed these documents with the California State Contractor?s Licensing Board to make him exempt from securing worker?s compensation insurance.

California law requires that all employers maintain workers? compensation insurance for their employees. Payroll records showing the number of employees and their income must be submitted to both the workers? compensation insurance company and EDD, who oversee the collection of payroll taxes. Workers? Compensation Insurance rates are determined by a formula, which takes into consideration the number and type of employees and the company?s history of injury claims.

Premium insurance fraud is committed when an employer intentionally misrepresents to the State or insurance company the number of employees, the type of work performed, the amount of payroll, and the loss history. These illegal misrepresentations allow deceitful employers to calculate and purchase workers? compensation insurance at a significantly lower premium rate, or to avoid purchasing the insurance at all.? This practice places their competitors at a disadvantage because it forces them to compete against a company with fraudulently lower operating costs.

Premium fraud drives up the cost of insurance premiums for legitimate businesses that pay higher rates for their employees? workers? compensation insurance coverage. These legitimate businesses are less competitive against crooked companies who are able to under-bid their competitors due to lower business costs resulting from insurance fraud. This also endangers injured employees who may be denied workers? compensation benefits intended to meet their physical, psychological, and financial needs for a work-related injury.

KENSETH WINS FIRE-AND-RAIN-DELAYED GREAT AMERICAN RACE

If there's anyone left out there who's still wondering how NASCAR became the dominant force in auto racing in North America, all they had to do was watch it in action over the three days it took to run the Daytona 500 - which finally finished early today with Matt Kenseth in Victory Lane.

Sunday, when the race was held up initially because of rain and it looked like the delay would carry on into the evening and the race would have to go up against the Academy Awards in a TV ratings showdown, NASCAR wisely cancelled its marquee event until Monday.

Then, rather than start the race in the afternoon (which was possible) when most people in North America were at work and the TV ratings would be negligible, the NASCAR braintrust announced Monday morning that the Great American Race would start sharp at 7 p.m., right when prime time starts in TV land.

Before you could say NASCAR! (and with no NBA basketball because of the all-star break) just about every eyeball on the continent was on that race and I would be surprised if the ratings don't turn out to be better than if they'd been able to run the thing when first scheduled.

Sunday afternoon is a time for families, recreation or shopping. So the Daytona 500 would have had competition. But Monday night? Particularly when most of North America is caught up in a deep freeze?

So the Daytona 500 had no distractions or other?competition to speak of at all - and I won't be surprised if NASCAR now?gives serious consideration to scheduling the 2013 race on a Monday night, rather than the traditional?Sunday afternoon.

Having said that, isn't it weird - and I can't think of another word to explain it - that for the second time in three years a problem with the race track played havoc with the spectacle itself? And the delay pushed the end of the race - which took about six hours to complete - into the early hours of Tuesday, making it a three-day event.

Two years ago it was a pothole that just wouldn't stay fixed. Monday night, the most bizarre circumstance I think anybody involved in racing has ever encountered or experienced saw the speedway surface so badly damaged as the result of a fiery collision between Juan Pablo Montoya's car and a truck pulling a jet blower that it took more than two hours?to repair it.

Earlier, five-time series champion Jimmie Johnson was crashed out of the race on the second lap, celebrity driver Danica Patrick's car was so badly damaged that she was knocked out of?contention, and long-time favourite Jeff Gordon was eliminated by a?blown engine.

So it had been a long night.

When they finally got the race going again shortly after midnight, with the grandstands still mostly filled and probably most of the TV audience sticking it out too, they had a couple of more "big one"-type crashes and a green-white-checkers finish that saw Kenseth win the classic for the second time, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. second and Greg Biffle third.

It would take too long to provide a blow-by-blow description of the last lap, but whether Biffle was blocking for Kenseth, or Earnhardt just couldn't push him past the leader, is something that could be debated?in racing circles for some time.

On the other hand, it might not. As the racers like to say these days, it is what it is.

One thing's?for certain, however. Jack Roush,?whose Roush-Fenway Racing team?owns the first and third-place cars, is off to a terrific start in 2012. His Ford engines not only powered the Daytona winner and the third-place car to the podium, but three of his other power plants?finished one-two-three in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona Grand Am Sports Car Series race at the end of January.

Five out of six places ain't bad. NASCAR will be pleased.

Celebrate Good Times, Come On! ? scillagrace

Today is my darling baby?s 21st birthday, which in the good ole U. S. of A. means that she can legally purchase and/or be served an alcoholic drink.?? Whoo-hoo!? This becomes quite the rite of passage for many people.? It used to be that different states had different legal drinking ages.? Back in the 70s, Illinois had it at 21 and Wisconsin had it at 18, so lots of kids would drive over the border to drink and then drive home drunk.? Not something a mother wants to think about for too long.? In my family of origin, though, drinking was done at home.? The first (and only!) time I got sick from sampling alcohol, I was 10 years old.? My mother made a Greek dinner and my father let me taste Ouzo, retsina, and Metaxa.? I learned how much is too much pretty early.? I also learned that I could get much better alcohol at home than I could at a party with my peers.?? For me, it is all about taste.? My father once educated my children at the dinner table by explaining how alcohol is a solvent that releases fragrance and enhances the taste of food.? What is the primary liquid in fine perfumes?? Alcohol.? The pairing of food and drink is a scientific discovery of pleasure.? Coming from my dad, that seemed to be the ?right? approach, and I think it has served pretty well.? My kids grew up having tastes in increased measures and never became binge drinkers.? My baby had her first taste when she was baptized at two months old.? The priest dipped his finger in the communion wine and let her suck on it.? She was a full-fledged member from that day on.? Why not?

When I turned 21, I was engaged to be married.? My fiance took me out for a champagne brunch after church.? All through my 20s, I was having babies.? I never went to bars and hardly drank at all.? I have no cultural experience of ?the bar scene?, and that amuses Steve no end these days.? I also missed all of the pop music scene from the 80s on.? I am a walking anachronism, it seems.? Oh, well.? I still think I know how to have fun.? I do drink and dance and sing?mostly with family.? Tonight, my kids are going out together to do Broadway karaoke at a gay bar.? Now, I could fit right in with that!? I worked for a children?s musical theater company for 7 years, and my kids were all involved.? We rock the Broadway tunes!? Sadly, though, Mom is not invited.? Not this time, but I hope in the near future.

And now, for the photo journal portion.? My family album reveals ?Celebrations, Then & Now?:

It starts with my family of origin. My mom at the piano after serving us a gourmet meal and wine. This was typical. Pictured: my sisters, brother, and a niece. (photo: DKK)

Next: Me & Jim at a church talent show. Yes, a couple of hams with a couple of drinks in them, singing and dancing.

?

So, then what happens? We raise a bunch of talented kids who like to perform and dress up and drink like pirates!

See? It's a theme.

So then my baby gets the bug really bad, and she's really good! (and I can't get this to print any bigger, sorry!)

And she's absolutely fabulous and happy onstage!

And I am incredibly proud of her!

?

And sometimes, we get to play dress up and sing and dance together!

And now, she?s all growed up! (*sniff*)? You are fabulous, Miss Em!? Go rock the scene tonight, celebrate your life, your health, your talent, your livelihood, your friends & family, and the fact that you are here and surrounded by love!!? And I know you won?t forget, that love extends beyond visible boundaries.

Your daddy adores you!

And he now celebrates the remarkable lady you've become with a bigger smile than he could muster with his physical form!

I am beginning my 50th year of life. I like to write and take pictures. My sister did a really cool project the year she was turning 50, so once again, I'm following in her footsteps. My life has changed dramatically in the last 5 years, and I have changed with it. My husband died, my kids moved out, I sold our home and moved in with a tall, dark Scorpio. I suppose I have a lot to process, and I'm sure there will be more.

Carnival of Personal Finance: The Little Prince's Journey to ...

journey to financial enlightenment2 Carnival of Personal Finance #350: The Little Princes Journey to Financial Enlightenment

Once upon a?time, in a far away kingdom, lived a Little Prince and his Wise Wizard. The King, who is very old, wanted to make sure his Little Prince is ready to take over the mantle of ruling the kingdom before he puts?the Little Prince?into the will [Sustainable Personal Finance]?He is rightfully concerned about the generational differences when it comes to debt [Yes I Am Cheap], and so he asked the Wise?Wizard to help the Little Prince get to the Land of Financial Enlightenment. ?I don?t want him to grow up all silly nilly about money! What if he marries a princess who buys purses?all the time?[Diva in Debt] and go broke?! I need him to be a good leader and understand investments [Grow Money]??said the King.??HMPH. That?s playing into gender stereotypes [My Broken Coin],? the Wise Wizard said, ?but I will help the Little Prince reach his destination and understand financial matters in relationships [Busy Executive Money Blog].?

And so the Wise Wizard and the Little Prince set out on their journey. Along the way, the Wise Wizard tried to impart words of, well, wisdom to the Little Prince.

?To reach your Findependence Day [Boomer & Echo], you must overcome obstacles and learn to figure out for yourself what truly matters in life,? the Wise Wizard said.??But I already know the 10 Commandments to Growing Wealth [Wealth and Wise],? said the Little Prince, ?This will be an easy journey.?

?It is not enough to simply know, you must also act,? The Wise Wizard explained, ?let me tell you about all the obstacles you will encounter.?

?Having pride in yourself and work is a good thing, but never be too proud to shop at discount stores [See Debt Run]. Along the way to Land of Financial Enlightenment, you might see alluring images of fast cars and pretty women [Saving Advice], but driving an uncool car is actually awesome [Graduating with Surplus]. If you stick to the 20% rule [Your Life, Their Life], you?can help you achieve your goals more quickly.?

?But I KNOW all these obstacles already,? the Little Prince said, for he was a very smart Little Prince. ?I?ve read about them in books and on blogs. I?m a great student [Humble Savers].? The Wise?Wizard shook his head. You can?t just understand the numbers (although that is very important) ? you have to modify your behavior [Consumerism Commentary] to make lasting change. Sometimes, you have to experience things ? losing money in the stock market [Million Ways to Save], fall victim to price anchoring? [Smart on Money], co-signing a loan [Christian Debt Coach], and?marrying for money [Nicole & Maggie] before you learn what works and what doesn?t.?

?Getting to Financial Enlightenment doesn?t sound much fun,? said the Little Prince, ?I like to look good and enjoy my life.???You can!,? insists the Wise Wizard, ?you can?make fashion affordable [Everything Finance], you will live longer! [Squirrelers], and if you make good choices, you will be able to?become a?stay at?home dad [Tie the Money Knot] if you wish.? The Little Prince wrinkled his nose. ?But I killed my last three goldfishes,? he said. ?Er, well, don?t quit your day job yet [My Money Design]!? sighed the Wise Wizard.

As the two walked and walked and walked along the road to Financial Enlightenment, they talked and talked and talked.

The Little Prince asked, ?the Land of Financial Enlightenment is when I finally get RICH, right?? The Wise?Wizard chuckled. ?Money isn?t the only measure of success [Barbara Friedberg Personal Finance], in fact, money is just a tool. Once you build your foundations [Free Money Finance], you will be able to use money to do what you really want to do in life ? whether that?s to spend more time with your future Princess, create more buildings for the royal grounds, or contribute to charity [Mrs. Nespy's World]. There are tools to help you do this: automating bill payments [Budgeting in the Fun Stuff], taking advantage of payroll tax cuts [Novel Investor], selecting a good IRA?company?[Qwoter], and taking advantage of no?balance transfer fee credit cards [Wallet Blog].?

Finally, after many days of study, the Little Prince was ready for his important interview?[Adjunctorium] with the King. The King quizzed him on all he has learned, from tax reporting forms[Nerd's Eye View], to renters and laundry fees [Start Talking Cents], to tips for easier budgeting[Money Talks Coaching], to using Google Docs spreadsheet for investing?[My Journey to Millions], to?making extra money?[Bible Money Matters], to chargeback?policy report [CardHub]. The King asked about the general economy?[Narrow Bridge Finance], the local economy[Debt Black Hole], evaluating intangibles [Pinch That Penny], and when DIY works and when?DIY doesn?t?[DollarVersity].

The Little Prince was able to answer the King?s questions flawlessly. He gave the King?the low down on RESP plans [Young & Thrifty], discussed the rules of career reinvention [Afford Anything], explained the virtues of saving paper [Funny About Money],?talked about the benefits of getting a 60 month auto loan [Familyancial Wealth,?listed?ways to save at the gas pump[Personal Finance Success], ran over reasons why a home inspector [Happy Homeowner] is necessary, and even explained?how to find jobs using social media [One Cent At A Time]. The King knew nothing about social media or SEO keywords [Mike & Molly's House], so he was very impressed indeed!

?You seemed to have learned a lot,? said the King, ?I want to reward your?efforts [Money Cactus].? Then the King, confident that the Little Prince can handle his finances, gifted him real estate [Investor Junkie], bonds [Dividend Growth Stocks], bond funds [Control Your Cash], and even shares of Ford stock [Dividend Monk]!

?But wait!? The Little Prince interrupted, ?I haven?t told you what I REALLY learned yet.? ?You haven?t?? The King was confused. ?But you talked to me about knowing when to adjust your budget [Evolving Personal Finance], learning a foreign language?[Darwin's Money], evaluating Betterment?[Dough Roller]. You showed me how you improve your credit score [Financial Highway],?save [PT Money], buy travel insurance?[One Frugal Girl], and?use a rewards credit card [Rewards Cards USA]. You even have the discipline to hide money ? from yourself [Frugal Cool]. It sounds to me that you have achieved Financial Enlightenment.?

?All that is important,? the Little Prince admitted, ?I did learn about tax forms?[Free From Broke], Social Security [My Dollar Plan],?Bank of America Add It Up Rewards [Financial Product Reviews], and dividend investing?[Dividend Growth Investor], I learned about what happens in Chapter 11?[Prairie Eco Thrifter], when to cancel my credit card [Help Me Travel Cheap],?and how to?save for the holidays [Net Worth Journey]. I even learned about unconventional investment moves [Invest It Wisely]. But I don?t want to get tunnel?vision when it comes to my finances?[Money Beagle]. Because what the Wise Wizard taught me was that financial enlightenment is about making decisions so you can live the best life you can, and have your spending and finances reflect your priorities.?

The King smiled! The Little Prince has passed his test. He knows that the Little Prince has a bright financial future [Watson Inc], and for that he is happy. The Wise Wizard?is also happy. In fact, he?thought,??Maybe I should start?my own financial firm [Good Financial Cents]!?

Your Back Will Feel Better With These ? ? New Health and Fitness ...

New Health And Fitness.Org ? Health Information You Can Use

To say that living with back pain is a challenge is an understatement. When you?re dealing with chronic pain, just making it through the day can be difficult. But as hard to live with as back pain can be, there are plenty of things that can be done to help. Here are some tips to get you started.

Consider taking up long-duration, low-intensity exercise habits to fight back pain. Swimming, cycling and walking are excellent routines that provide overall fitness without calling for undue strain on your back. When performed properly, they also encourage good posture, which can help your back muscles work efficiently and reduce the stress you place on them.

Include aqua-aerobics as part of your back exercise routine. This type of exercise is particularly effective for chronic back pain because the water gives you a sense of weightlessness and reduces resistance against your body as you exercise, thus reducing the pressure against your back. These exercises are also fun to do.

Your sitting position can cause back strain if done improperly. If you?re sitting at a desk chair for long hours, make sure to sit with your lower back touching the back of the chair and leaning back slightly so that your back muscles can disengage and not get worn out.

Take aspirin to combat back pain. Aspirin is known to have quick acting effects on pain in the back. You can take them at the first signs of pain. Take them according to package directions and never take more than is recommended. If you have ulcers seek pain management advice from your doctor.

Utilize sources of heat for comfort against back pain. In most cases, back pain is caused by some sort of inflammation and applying heat will reduce this inflammation, offering more comfort against the pain. This is a very safe and effective method of relieving pack pain and is very cost efficient as well.

You can become a victim of chronic back pain, simply by practicing poor posture. To avoid this type of pain, focus on sitting straight at work or school and keep shoulders back while walking. In these days of technology, we rely on computers and end up with poor posture. Surfing the net can be the biggest culprit of all, when it comes to increased back pain!

Learning to lift properly can save yourself a lot of back pain in the future. Learning to lift from the knees instead of just bending over to lift will greatly reduce the strain on your back. This will keep your back from being over exerted and help you keep your back from developing pain earlier.

When working at your desk or computer, make sure you sit in the proper posture or purchase an ergonomic chair. Be sure to get up and walk around and loosen your muscles. It is easier to keep them from getting cramped rather than trying to get out the cramps in your back.

Even with these excellent tips, living with back pain isn?t going to be as easy as living without it. However, these tips will make your suffering much more manageable. If you apply the advice in this article and work to take care of your back, you may see incredible results in the long run. Truly, what we have provided you here, today, is by no means the end of the learning process about Pain Relief. All we desired to do is show you what is available but still useful at the same time. It would be mistaken to ever have the notion that the story concludes right here, though. There is much more that can seriously produce the kind of outcomes anyone would want. HTC One V unveiled: Sense 3.6 on ICS, Beats audio, 3.7-inch WVGA LCD

It's not often that device codenames serve as a direct mission statement, but with the outing of the One V, neé Primo, first-timers are getting an entry level HTC-welcome. The Ice Cream Sandwich-laden handset, running a Sense 3.6 overlay, hearkens back to the design of the Legend, with a black-ish gray, aluminum unibody, hardware keys (three for back, home and apps) and prominent chin jutting out below its Gorilla Glass-coated, 3.7-inch WVGA LCD display. The company hasn't specified the exact CPU powering the phone, but we do know it's a 1GHz single-core affair buffered by 512MB RAM. Storage-wise, you're looking at a paltry 4GB onboard with plans to augment that capacity via 25GB of Dropbox, as there's no available microSD slot. Beneath its sealed enclosure lies a 1,500mAh battery, quadband GSM and WCDMA radios, in addition to support for GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth. Directly benefiting from the manufacturer's recently announced ImageChip, is its 5 megapixel rear shooter, outfitted with an AF f/2.0 lens and capable of recording 720p video. There's no front-facing camera to be found on the unit, although situated as it is on the lower end of the consumer spectrum, that's to be expected. Check after the break for HTC's video preview.

Ins and outs of flood insurance [American News, Aberdeen, S.D. ...

Federal Emergency Management Agency specialist said during a recent visit to Aberdeen.

But, Norm Ashford said, it?s not possible. And that?s why the federal government offers flood policies through private insurance agencies.

While flood insurance is required for all people who live in high-risk flood zones and is available to everybody, policies are often misunderstood, Ashford said. Damage caused by floods is not covered by general homeowner policies.

Ashford said people often have a couple of questions about flood policies:

Q. How is a flood defined?

A. Simply put, a flood involves temporary surface water on more than one piece of property or multiple acres, Ashford said.

?This is flood policy, and a flood is surface water,? he said.

Q. What do flood insurance policies cover?

A. Flood insurance policies don?t cover damage caused by seepage that?s not from surface water and don?t cover sewer backup damage unless the backup is caused by surface water. They do cover surface water that runs in through windows and causes damage.

Policies for residences cover as much as $250,000 in flood damage to homes, Ashford said. As much as $100,000 in coverage is available for contents, though that requires an extra premium charge. While there is 10 percent coverage for detached garages, separate policies are needed to cover other structures on your home?s property.

Premiums for the most basic flood insurance policies for homes in low- and moderate-risk flood zones start at $129 annually, according to information from FEMA. But policies can cost considerably more, especially for people who live in high-risk zones.

Basements

Flood policies also offer limited coverage for basements. They will pay for pumping out water, cleaning up basements, drywall, insulation, new studs, foundation damage and new appliances, Ashford said. But they won?t cover the cost of finish work like painting or putting on siding. Some contents stored in basements are also covered, he said.

A basement is defined as any room or portion of a room that has its floor below grade on all sides.

Ashford said a presidential disaster declaration is not needed for flood insurance claims to be paid.

Live Webinar Reveals...

While it?s been a mild winter and the prospect of flooding appears low, FEMA officials urge residents to keep their flood insurance policies in place. Trying to guess when it might flood is dangerous because natural disasters don?t follow schedules, they said.

?Don?t try and time it,? Ashford said of buying a flood insurance policy.

Policies don?t go into effect until 30 days after they?re purchased.

A big reason that flood policies have the caveats they do is that premiums have to cover the cost of the program, Ashford said. The federal flood insurance program is not subsidized by the federal government, he said.

Why horses shrank to the size of housecats

An ancient global warming event shrunk the earliest horses down to the size of scrawny housecats, according to new research that could have implications for what mammals might look like in a future warming world.

During what's known as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, or PETM, about 56 million years ago, a massive release of carbon into the atmosphere and oceans boosted average global temperatures by about 10 degrees Fahrenheit (5.5 degrees Celsius) over 175,000 years. Mammals responded to this climate change by shrinking, with about one-third of species getting smaller.

Now, new research reveals that these changes occurred in lockstep with temperature fluctuations during the period. The earliest-known horse , Sifrihippus started out this period as a bit of a pipsqueak: The animals weighed only about 12 pounds (5.6 kilograms) on average, about the size of a miniature schnauzer.

But by 130,000 years into the PETM, Sifrihippus had shrunk down to only about 8.5 pounds (3.9 kg), the size of a small housecat. These humble horses then experienced a size rebound, bulking up to about 15 pounds (7 kg) in the last 45,000 years of this warm period, putting them on par with the average bichon frise.

Horse's mouth
Researchers led by Ross Secord of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and Jonathan Bloch of the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida were able to track these changes over time using a trove of fossils from the southern Bighorn Basin in Wyoming. Measurements of horses' teeth found in the area suggested a distinct pattern of shrinking and growing body size over the PETM time period. At first, that finding seemed like a mistake, Bloch told Livescience, because the assumption had been that horses in the PETM were all uniformly teeny.

The researchers then analyzed the oxygen isotopes (atoms of the same element with different masses) in the horse teeth, which serve as markers of local temperatures at the time the horses died. They found that temperatures perfectly matched up with size measurements. The hotter it got, the smaller the horses. Other factors, including aridity and carbon dioxide concentration, did not match up as well.

"This, for the first time, tells us that temperature is what's driving the body size evolution for these horses," Bloch said. He and his colleagues reported the findings Thursday in the journal Science.

The findings fit with what is known about modern-day mammals and birds, which are generally smaller near the equator. This may be because smaller size helps animals regulate their body temperatures in the heat, or perhaps because of the availability of food sources. (Much of the land near the equator is arid, and food sources are slim, Bloch said.)

Mammals in a warming world
The world experienced about the same amount of warming during the PETM as some climate models project it will in response to today's greenhouse gas emissions. The difference, Bloch said, is that the warming in the PETM happened over 170,000 years, while modern temperatures could reach PETM levels within a century or so if projections are correct.

"While our study provides a measure of possible response to global warming ? that is, getting smaller ? in a sense that is the best-case scenario," Bloch said. If animals can't evolve quickly enough to keep up, they're more likely to go extinct.

"It can only get worse, basically," Bloch said.

My Damage Survey of the Rome Tornado

At approximately 10:04 a tornado touched down in Rome, GA.... It traveled around 3 miles with around 95mph winds and at one point it was around 75yards wide. Not a very wide or long tracked tornado, but if you were hit by it it was life changing. I headed up to Rome yesterday to survey the damage myself to see what I thought since the NWS had just issued a statement that it was an ef1. This will be an analysis of what I saw and my conclusion.

Pic #1

This is the first thing I saw when I pulled up to the site. It looked like total debris slammed all over the place, like a tornado had torn it apart..... Once I got closer I saw something different as I looked at the rest of the building. The back of the building was directly perpendicular to where the wind was coming from. The wind hit that wall, went straight up and lifted the roof from behind and threw it over in one piece. I could tell because all the shingles were pointing down, and nails were pointing up. It all came down as one big piece and then fractured. At this point in time I had determined that this was straight line wind damage.

Pic #2

This house was directly across the street from where that roof was torn off. This actually was a simple assessment for me when we walked upon it. Every single piece of lumber was lined up in the exact same direction and all the trees that were lying down in that same direction too. It was very clear to me that this was straight line wind damage. So I had to figure out in my head how the NWS went with an EF1 when all was seeing was straight line wind damage. The only thing that was saying anything different was that the damage swath was very very narrow..... Straight line wind damage is usually very spread out. I had to go find the beginning of the track.

Pic #3

We wend back about 2 miles from where we were on Kingston Highway to find the starting point of the tornado and what I found floored me. It was a 75 yard wide area of giant pine trees that were again all knocked down in the exact same direction.... I was really scratching my head again on this trying to figure out how the NWS called this event a tornado....... So after thinking for a bit I again focused on the fact that the trees were all lying down in the same direction but was only 75 yards wide and stayed that wide. Also as I turned and looked more towards the right (south) I started seeing trees snapped mid trunk and thrown in directions a bit more towards the center of where this swath was... ahhhh, I was starting to see some convergent patterns where the trees to the right hand side of the path were bent a bit more towards the center of the swath. This is consistent with tornado damage.

Pic #4 and #5

As we walked away from the area that had a lot of trees laying down in the same direction we started to see some trees that were laying across each other, the roots were pointing in opposite directions, consistent with swirling winds inside a tornado. At this point in time for this specific location it seemed like tornado damage. But even up the road from there there were a lot of trees laying in the same direction in a very narrow path. And then it clicked.. What I thought was the center of the swath was actually the 12-6 o'clock position of a tornado!!!

Image I drew

It all goes back to the classical physics experiment with throwing a ball from a moving train... If you and I were standing on a flatbed on a train going 60mph and I threw the ball at you that was traveling at 60mph, it would hit you at 60mph. If you were standing on the ground and I was on a train going 60mph and threw the ball at 60 mph, it would hit you at 60mph(the speed of the ball) + 60mph(the speed of the train) = 120 mph!!!! This is called relative motion. So, same with the tornado with its winds (acting like a ball) and the motion of the tornado (the speed of the train) The tornado had max wind speeds of around 70mph according to the NWS, and it was moving at 40mph. so on the right hand side the relative winds (the wind speed the trees felt) was 110mph!!! On the left hand side they felt winds at 30mph which is weak and would do nothing to trees!?

Conclusion

What I had been looking at was the right hand side of the tornado path where with the combined speed of the winds of the tornado plus the forward momentum knocked down a 75 yard wide swath of trees.?

Bones Out of Joint - interview with Sean Craven & Holly Gilmour

The River King ? Sean Craven

Science-art can take us to surprising places. It?s not always the product of a lab or research, but the seeds of understanding can have a large impact on different facets of culture. ?It?s one of the ways we know that science is woven into all of our lives, and not just kept in the gee-whiz box on the shelf.

Today, I present an interview with two artists from non-science backgrounds, both of whom have an affinity for bones. ?Bones are culturally loaded artifacts of lives lived, of the macabre, of lost chances. I?ve known and been a fan of these two artists for years, one in real life and the other online, and I?m excited they?ve agreed to share their work and thoughts here on Symbiartic.

Introducing Sean Craven and Holly Gilmour.

- -

Hello Sean, Hello Holly! Thanks for agreeing to this emailed-chat. ?Please introduce yourselves.

? Sean Craven, Renaissance Oaf

Sean Craven, Renaissance Oaf

Sean: My name is Sean Craven. ?I?m a writer, artist, and performer. I?ve spent years working in the underground press and am now attempting to crawl out into the light. I blog about my life and art at Renaissance Oaf. ?While I?ve struggled with the problem of picture-making since childhood, I began seriously studying art at Santa Rosa Junior College under Maurice Lapp in 1987, when I was twenty-two. I?ve continued throughout my life, taking courses at Laney Junior College, Studio 7 in Oakland, the San Francisco Computer Arts Institute, and most recently Berkeley City College. I?ve lived in charming-but-embarrassing Berkeley, California for the last twenty-three years.
Hollu Gilmour behind one of her creations.
Holly: My name is Holly Gilmour, I am an illustrator, sculptor and seamstress (and throw in a pinch of make-up artist and photographer). You can follow my blog here. I have been interested in art since I was just a kid back in the early 80?s, getting a lot of my inspiration from old?movies and books. I graduated from Sheridan College in 2004 and spent the rest of my time having art shows and attending crafter sales in Toronto, Canada.

Currently I am living in rural Ontario befriending many small woodland animals and practising my birdcalls?ok not really.

Before I lived in Toronto I grew up in a small town 3 hours east of Toronto.

What started your interest with depicting bones and skeletons? Is there something about making the image that?s important to you, instead of referencing photos?
Holly:
We were surrounded by farms and country side.?My interest in bones and skeletons come from the animals?that would live in these areas. You would always find little?mouse bones or other little animal skeletons in the woods. That?always made me think of little stories about the?animals that?those bones belong to. I am currently working on a?series called ?The Bone Collectors?. Little spirits that go?around the woods gathering the bones of the animals who lived?there.

Holly Gilmour's Bone Collector

Bone Collector ? Holly Gilmour

?

Sean: It began with my first drawing class. Once we?d achieved a reasonable level of draftsmanship, our instructor brought out a box full of human skulls. Complexity, symmetry, and organic flow made them the most engaging objects I?d drawn up to that point, difficult but not impossible. There?s a sense of honor about doing some subjects justice. That these skulls were once parts of people, worthy of affection and respect, demanded a higher level of artistry than I?d been motivated to achieve before.

Since my surrealist works referenced in this article are initially assembled from photographs, it might be good to point out that what I do here is influenced by the culture of appropriation. I?m using the techniques a lot of people use to create collages, posters, and LOLcats. But rather than appropriate the photographs I work with, I take them myself to fit a preconceived composition, and instead of collage, I try for montage.

Working with photographs has been an unexpected boon in many ways ? as an example, I learned more about light in the few months it took me to do the initial set of images than I?d learned in twenty years of art study.

Skullblossom by Sean Craven

Skullblossom ? Sean Craven

Sean is a writer of unusual and science fiction, and?Holly?an illustrator (I hesitate to call you a cartoonist since you don?t work in sequential narratives). ?Do bones and skeletons symbolize anything in your artwork? ?Is grappling with human mortality a part of the work?

Sean: The Bonelands depicted in these images represent post-traumatic stress disorder as much as mortality. They?re a landscape shaped by the emotional response to violence, specifically the Civil War, but that?s a stand-in for institutionalized violence in general. It?s a carrion world being gradually reclaimed by the inevitable forces of life.

Holly: I have always been fascinated with mortality. That started at
a very young age, not sure why. I ?definitely think that it helps fuel my imagination.
My interest always tend to lean towards creepy and dark.

Bride and Doooom ? Holly Gilmour

Each of you has online galleries or blogs. What made you decide to take your images online? Is feedback helpful?

Sean: Putting art online seems like a natural first step in introducing one?s work to the world. And while feedback is helpful, I?ve found I need an audience to work at my best. If I work for myself, I drift from one technical challenge to another. If I work for others, I have to communicate. It?s as if the work is a string. If it?s just me holding onto it, it lies there, limp. But if someone grabs hold of the other end, it pulls taut.

Holly: Online is the best way to promote yourself, Especially if you are?self employed. Feedback is always great, although I usually?get that from friends and family. Its nice to share your work?with the rest of the world and that gives me a lot of inspiration. ?Meeting people who have similar interest, etc etc.

Do you foresee or have you found that your paintings have informed your research or other artwork in some way? (Holly, for you is it part of an aesthetic. You?re not exactly goth, but?)

Sean: It?s not something you?re supposed to admit, but my art is strongly literary. These prints have two separate literary influences. The black-and-white versions of these images accompany the fiction published in Swill magazine. The stories are not considered while the images are being made ? that it?s possible to match images to stories and enhance both is a pleasant mystery.

The seminal influence is my recently-completed novel. Deep in the writing process, my concepts and imagery became predictable. So I lay down in a quiet room with my eyes covered until I began to see things. I rendered these visions as prints. Once I incorporated those images into the novel, the story began to provoke prints directly. It developed into a complicated feedback cycle, and the fictional world defined itself over the course of a four-year public conversation between my art and my writing.

Holly: It has a lot to do with aesthetic, I am heavily influenced by what I watch, read and listen too. ?Fashion, movies, songs. ?Like I mentioned earlier, anything creepy and dark seems to tickle my fancy. ?I find even just looking at Gothic Lolita girls online for half an hour gives me a lot of inspiration.

Self-Portrait ? Holly Gilmour

Do you have a favourite medium to work with?

Holly: Gouache! I love the stuff! ?Time to time I pull out the acrylics.?

Sean: Well, my favorite mediums would be graphite and the computer. I don?t paint. I fight with paint. Colored pencil is limited and laborious. The sound of pastels against paper makes my flesh creep. And so on. But pencil and charcoal are simple extensions of my hand, requiring no thought. And the very first time I used a first-generation Wacom tablet, I knew I?d found my medium. I am a digital artist.

The Canyon ? Sean Craven

Tell us about the image that?s made the most impact.

Sean: The Kicker has gotten around more than any other image from the Bonelands. It started off as the cover for the third issue of Swill, was placed in an art show at Berkeley City College, was reproduced in a student newspaper as part of the promotion for the show, and due to personal requests, it?s also on three different kitchen walls.

(It also inspired a fight scene in the novel.)

Holly: My most ?famous? piece of art would be my Vampire Jelly Donut and Bride and Doooom (above). ?Vampire Jelly Donut always makes me giggle but I?m proud of my Bride and Doooom, that piece got me really inspired to keep going with the skull people.

Although each of you is exploring images of skeletons and bones, I don?t see anything gruesome or horrific in your work. ?Is that a conscious decision?

Holly: There was a short period of time where I experiment with more gruesome looking pieces. None of it was documented, I?m not even sure if those piece are around still.?My work has been described as Gothic Hello Kitty. Sometimes there is a bit of blood, but?usually I hear ?oh its so cutesy creepy!?,hahaha.

Sean: I think there are specific images that do have some horror to them, but for the most part, I was aiming for a sense of contemplation more than anything else. Quiet, vast, enclosed. The bones aren?t there to be scary; it?s the implied space between them I?m concerned with. The juxtaposition of emotionally charged complex objects helps the viewer create an emotionally resonant space in their mind, one that harmonizes with some of my states of thought.

Where do you go to look for references?

Sean: My wife uses bones as decorative elements in her garden, and her plants also play a strong role in these images. I gather broken bits of machinery and electronics and scatter them around my studio. That?s how I start ? I look around the house until I see the other world.

The Craven family garden.

Karen gets most of her bones at yard sales (this should tell you something about Berkeley), but I?ve gotten in the habit of nabbing any carrion that crosses my path. Got a lovely fox skull and skunk skull that way. I?m still wondering what happened to the baby raccoon I found ? I was going to use it in a series to be called The Exhumation of the Boy King, but some animal, probably another raccoon, stole the body from our compost bin before it had sufficiently decayed.

Holly: ?In the days before the Internet, I got a lot of my ideas from movies and illustrations.?Which I still do, but the Internet helps me find more of it. ?Like when I was a kid I would get a lot of inspiration from movies like Dark Crystal and Return to Oz. ?And A LOT of books like Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz series.
As for reference, my bones and skulls are loosely based on real anatomy. My bones are super simplified and not technical at all.

Skull 2 ? Holly Gilmour

Why or how did you get into this field? ?What do you hope to do with your work?

Holly: I have always been creative, recently I was going through all my old report cards?from grade school. Every single report card said the same thing. Satisfactory grades in ?everything but Art and Drama. I always had top marks in the arts. So when it came time for?me to think about a career I didn?t really have a hard time deciding what direction?I wanted to go in. As long as I?m being creative.?I enjoy working with my hands and hope one day to do more sewing and sculpting.?I love toy making and costumes, so I have been pointing myself more in that direction lately.

Sean: ?I was pulled in by necessity. I was asked to illustrate Swill, and after I used up my old work, I had to do new work that was both presentable and quick to produce. I?d always thought of myself as primarily a draftsman, but the time constraints made it impossible for me to use an illustrative approach. I turned to photographs and scans, figuring it would be easy enough to generate quick compositions.

It didn?t work out that way. Rather than filling pages, I found myself emotionally invested in the images. I wasn?t just illustrating; I?d graduated to something I regard as real art. The followup series to The Bonelands, Seven Views of the Downtown Area, includes much less skeletal imagery, but contains a much richer level of interior content.

I?m tentatively exploring the fine arts scene. I?ve been in a couple of shows, talked to a couple of gallery owners. My goal is to produce one show from the art previously done for Swill.

Then I want to try and work outside the range of traditional printmaking. I want to use my prints as the basis for work that borders on the sculptural. I work digitally. I don?t own a color printer, so I rarely print my work. When I do? It?s exciting, but the print feels too small or limited, too flimsy, too cheap to feel like ?real? art to me. It?s not like working with a press and plates; a machine does all the work.

I want to do something more substantial. More like ?real? art. My current works are rendered as vector rather than raster images, so they can be outputted at any given size without loss of resolution. The images could be fed into laser cutters, or printed onto slabs of Lucite, or used as templates for molding concrete. This is extremely tentative, and I don?t know enough about the real-world possibilities to make serious plans. We shall see.

And earlier, I hinted at something important to me. I think I?ve figured out what it is that?s important to me in art, and how it relates to current theories of cognition. I think the experience I value in art comes down to complex and meaningful patterns of neurological activity, and I do know that my work has improved as a result of attempting to simultaneously trigger multiple brain centers in the reader or viewer. There?s something about the trifecta of evoking a memory, an emotion, and a sensory stimulus that seems particularly effective? I would dearly love to see if it is possible for me to do this predictably ? and that would mean doing actual research with actual scientists. Again, at this stage of my career, this sounds a bit like hubris.

The Tower ? Sean Craven

Where can interested science-art fans and institutions find you online?

Sean: I have a gallery up at Redbubble, ?and I?m associated with the ART Evolved paleo-art blog. To my amazement, I have an Amazon page , and my short story Tourists may be read at Tor.com and purchased from most ebook outlets. More recently, the story Deep Blue Dreams has been published in the anthology Future Lovecraft from Innsmouth Free Press. ?My blog, Renaissance Oaf is basically like hanging out with me ? boring, funny, thoughtful, worrisome, cranky, offensive, obscure, and occasionally horrifying. Also on Twitter @seancraven .?

Holly: Right now I just have my blog Holly Gilmour promoting my work?and on Twitter?@hollygil .

One last question: what?s your favourite colour?? Sean: You ask for specifics, but I always go by eye. I like ?em dark and cool. Where the green shallows plunge to the blue depths, where the yellow of the sunset fades into indigo. Any copper oxide will please me. I will admit that my recently-acquired ability to distinguish between bluish-red and true purple has moved purple way, way up in my estimate. I remember rounding a corner and catching a hillside covered with irises at an angle that showed nothing but the flowers, the hill so purple it made my eyes hurt. Got to love that.

Holly: Phthalo blue, so, greenish blues, blueish greens. I love them. Most of my hair is green! Thanks a lot Glendon!

Thank you both!
